Got a friend trying to find out more information about Dr. McCoy's medalion. Either this one...

Or even the one it was paying tribute to from the 70's...

it's a very subtle homage because the necklace has nothing in common beyond being a necklace?

Not anything specific concerning the design or origin of the medallion, but:

Urban also reveals that Star Trek Beyond contains a small nod to the DeForest Kelley character in the new film, referring back to Dr. McCoy in The Motion Picture. When “Bones” first returns to duty, he appears looking like a kind of a hipster with a long beard, exposed chest, and medallion, so, for Star Trek Beyond, Karl suggested having his version of McCoy appear in much the same way.

“You’ll see at the end of the film, I’m wearing an open shirt, and I’ve got a medallion on. Like, not a big one, but it’s there, and it’s a direct nod to DeForest [Kelley].”

Why? What is so great about a leading zero that its presence makes you "glad?" It's one of nature's most horrible aberrations and proof that JJ Abrams is not fit to direct these movies. We need more Justin Lin, there's no leading zeroes in Beyond.

Computers always sort by the first digit. Adding the zero(s) makes for a better spreadsheet. Otherwise....chaos ensues.
