Downsizing the Science Fiction Section in Bookstores

local hastings here carries 4 manga titles, I don't visit there often, so I am going to the B&N in Albuquerque, thier manga section is small...for now, I figure if I buy 2 manga a week there *plus I have to ORDER one a week cause they don't carry detective conan >.>) that I can get the manga section to eat the womyn power section by september
 4 manga titles? really? man no offence, but your hastings must be small! Both hastings near me have at least 50 to 100 titles!

My Borders started downsizing their Trek section a year or two ago. Very sad... that is why I buy most of my Trek books on-line (if I don't buy them right away).

it's a fairly small one, in a strip mall with an albertsons, a staples and a big 5

io9 has run a couple articles recently about how the sf industry's been doing:
Skim through http://io9.com/tag/books/

Apparently, it's been doing pretty well, actually.

Because book sales data are private and hard to come by, it's hard to get reliable data for a specific genre. Author Alexis Glynn Latner blogged the other day that science fiction book sales are "way down" except for a few big established authors. But I haven't been able to dig up any actual genre-specific data so far.

Yeah, but a later post says:
So is it true that science fiction book sales have dropped since the economy went dystopian? Not according to one publishing industry insider, who has access to actual Bookscan data. Apparently, the data show a slight increase in science-fiction book sales for 2008 over the year before, and no evidence of a steep plunge so far in 2009.

Admittedly, all the evidence is a bunch of hearsay.

I am lobbying my local B&N to put in an "incest Hentai Manga" section, so far i have over 6,000 signatures >.>

A while back I'd heard from Michael Stackpole that the entire publishing business was suffering, not because of the current economic downturn but because the internet, Kindle, & other such developments have totally exploded the existing business model. (He also gave his opinion on the viability of certain literary SF/F genres-- Cyberpunk? Techno-thrillers? Paranormal romance? All glutted & collapsed. The most consistently successful genre is the Tolkien-esque epic fantasy. Military sci-fi comes & goes but seems to be "in" right now. He also noted the continued success of "pet fantasies"-- coming of age stories where the protagonist has a psychic link with an animal, preferably a predator.)

Paranormal seems to be doing all right now, though I wouldn't be surprised if it did explode and collapse.

I belive so, however I thought it was in utah ''or'' ohio.:shifty: That's what I read anyway, was this guy your talking about get busted by the post-master general or something because the ''manga'' in question came from overseas and they check on that sort of thing?

were talking about different cases then I believe, because I think that the one I'm thnking of was a Lawyer in Jersey that got busted for CP posession because he had Loli on his laptop, but I don't remember the case because it was a while ago, so I may have some facts wrong

YEP, where talking about two different cases alright! I will have to find a link about the case I'm talking about, Even Neil Gaimen (creator of Sandman) & the president of dark horse comics talked about this case!
