He hasn't fought any natural instincts. Coming up with a plan and executing it are totally different things. Especially from the relative safety of a console. It's like saying internet trolls are brave.

I'm not saying he's a bad character. If you want to use Star Trek characters, he may very well have a Barclay type of arc where he's shy and skittish to begin with, but ends up being less skittish, but learns to overcome his fears. And Barclay was one of my favorite characters.

But he's nowhere near as cool as the other aliens I've mentioned. And right now, he doesn't strike me as anything special. But it's still too early to judge him or this series in general.
 
In the '7 years ago' flashback Suru was on the bridge and appeared to have a Lieutenants rank. In the present he is a LT. Commander. Where as Burnham when from no rank? seven years ago to a full commander and first officer. Wonder if he is a little jealous of that.

Internet trolls have not typically spent the past few hours in mortal dread and anxiety, sitting out a tight stand off with a hostile alien, being under fire from an enemy explicitly determined to kill them whilst trapped in what amounts to a fragile tin can floating in a vacuum or been rescued at the last second from a situation they genuinely believed would be their last moments.

There will, of course, be exceptions, but your common and garden trolls are mostly just sat in their basement.....

Doug Jones was actually a construction worker on the set who was standing underneath a ladder when a bucket of wall plaster fell on his head, so they added hooves and he's now on the bridge.
 
I think it's a refreshing character. Definitely a bright spot so far and further distances this series from the "everyone is perfect" aspect of TNG. It's much more than Doug Jones. He's great (as always), but he was given an interesting character.
 
There's no way in Stovokor that Saru could have ever passed his Academy Psych Evaluation. He'd still be in the corner pissing himself. There's only 2 ways they can go with him. Make him overcome his cowardice over a long period or just use him as the guy that votes the opposite of the brave starfleet officers. The former could be interesting if they take the time to develop him.
 
Could the Klingons have been the species that either bred and/or hunted the Kelpians?

With the fourth episode being titled "The butcher's knife doesn't care for the lambs cries" and the mentioning that Klingon food makes an appearance in that episode during After Trek, i wonder if the Klingons invade an kelpian planet to hunt and eat the Kelpians...

If so, I'd be a little disappointed that Saru didn't react (even) more strongly in light of the Klingons appearing in the premiere. Nah, I doubt it -- and besides, the way he phrases things in his dialogue strongly suggests to me that his planet developed either a.) two separate species or b.) some divergence occurred, either physiological or cultural or both, in a single species.

I can see a 2nd season episode along those lines where they get Arnold to guest star as a Kelpian soldier in a fight against a Klingon hunter. Lorca and Burnham argue over whether or not to break the prime directive to intervene.

Hmmm, could work if it was Listerally just a raiding party they decided they needed fresh stores, not that it was the klingons who bred them. Right up to the TNG era we know that the Klingons have fresh food on board, Martok prefers who's gagh moving. Oh god, I can imagine them having living kelpians chained up as live stock and the discovery having to rescue them. God that's stomach churning, and definitely tvma. Or as we say in Canada "14 plus" lol

Oh, like Isaac from Orville doesn’t have the same boring inflection as Data and admittedly probably Saru. In fact, there are times with Isaac I think it is Spiner’s voice. Particularly the delivery of “Captain” which is the same. Every. Time.

As for Saru, someone else said it: I’m not sure we’re supposed to like him at this point. And I frankly don’t know enough about him to make a full judgment on him.
 
It seems like Saru and his species being bred to sense death thing is not exactly being taken full advantage of. I wonder if he'll actually get to be useful with this trait? He sounded so eerie when he first announced it and now it's like he's fading into the background.
 
He'll probably get more screentime now that Burnham is now working on the bridge. I suspect the same will go for most of the bridge crew.
