Doug Drexler's blog

Re: ENTERPRISE XCV-330

I said it on the blog and I'll say it again here: I wish that ship had been the inspiration for NX-01, rather than for the Vulcans. I really like the idea of the rings being giant warp coils, and the latter day nacelles being compound, miniaturized rings. This slightly requires one to ignore the Phoenix's appearance in FC, but I'm fine with that. (Maybe each Phoenix nacelle could have in fact been a non-coil "solid state" warp impeller? ;))

In my mind, it was the Vulcans who should have been flying saucer-like ships, especially given they visited Earth in the 1950s already. :rommie:

One of my all time favorite Jefferies designs

Or it could have been sold as humanity's attempt to duplicate Vulcan's higher speed warp drives.

Re: ENTERPRISE XCV-330

^That would have worked too.

Maybe the Andorians could have had flying saucers, then? (Someone's got to! :D)

I'd have added two additional struts to the XCV-330 design, at 135 degrees from vertical, along which I'd have put rudimentary "solid state nacelles" like those from the Phoenix. Cary L. Brown has developed a nice version of this design along what I'd have preferred.

Re: ENTERPRISE XCV-330

I've loved this design ever since I first saw it. Making it fit in does pose a problem, if it's a Vulcan inspired design. Patent Pending and all that. They're famous for not sharing technology and holding humanity back.

Of course, this could be the root of the trouble. Humanity cheats in the 2120s keen to stand on our two feet. Our spies steal some Vulcan designs and base a new style of ship on it. At first it makes history. Then there's a terrible disaster and we're exposed, basically proving ourselves untrustworthy to our closest allies. The next generation of scientists, led by Henry Archer receive no assistance, exploring dead end trials based on Cochrane's nacelle design, before finally hitting on the right path. A Son watches his Father grow more and more tortured by public disapproval, wasting funds on failed attempts to get humanity places faster.

Re: ENTERPRISE XCV-330

Say, ChristopherPike, I like that origin for the ship. That could also be why no one ever talks about it. :p

^ :techman:

Heh, all is forgiven by The Motion Picture and its place in history gets reappraised enough for inclusion in the Rec Deck. Unfortunately Enterprise NX-01 must've been responsible for an even greater controversy and that ship took a while longer before anyone dared hang it alongside. As if its Skipper started an illegal war or something... :shifty:

Illegal war? I have no idea what you're talking about... :shifty: ;)

I was always convinced during ENT that the series finale would see the ship destroyed in action during the Romulan War with tragic losses, and that would be why it would be so long until there was a Federation Starfleet ship named after it, and why it would be left off of that TMP display - it was so special there were already plenty of memorials elsewhere for it.

Re: ENTERPRISE XCV-330

I like Enterprise XCV-330 ring nacelles. It is different then we are used to.. However the biggest beef i have with Enterprise XCV-330 design is that hull is too small and ring nacelles are too big and to far away from the hull. I like the Vulcan design better and this BSG ring nacelle version isn't bad http://www.battlestarasgard.org/images/ships/Intersun.jpg from

Re: ENTERPRISE XCV-330

I'm guessing that the original XCV-330 concept was probably going to be scaled a bit differently that we can probably safely assume this one is, thus the seemingly tiny hull size.

Doug Dexler on the NX01 turbolifts.

Like alot of us I have been reading Doug Dexler's WordPress blog and lov'in it! But I admit my jaw dropped when I saw this on the bost of the Enterprise cutaway:

The ship is too small to take a turbo lift.

???

WTFrak? The crew on Enterprise always used the turbolifts to get around, (except in the naccelle catwalks).

Re: Doug Dexler on the NX01 turbolifts.

Too bad putting your hand on a handrail on one would injure you, apparently.

Re: ENTERPRISE XCV-330

...and merging with the other Drexler thread.

Gang, how about we put all Drexler blog topics together in this thread, okay? I'm changing the title to suit.

I assume the turbolift shaft can only be seen on a port side cutaway view. Dexler has provided starboard. Looking from an exterior, the turboshaft is visable just behind the bridge dome. While the corridors run the length of the main hull, there has to be a shaft covering the depth of the ship at least, for crewpeople to get from the Launch Bay or Sickbay to the Bridge.

I believe Mr. Drexler was making a technical reference. The NX-01 has lifts or elevators, basically a car that only moves vertically. When you say "turbolift" you are referring to a lift system that travels vertically and horizontally. This type would be unnecessary in ship the size of the NX. :bolian:
