"Double Dipping" on games, have you done it?

Rii

Rear Admiral
I was looking over Bioshock PS3 earlier with an eye to picking it up if the additional content over the PC version could justify the purchase. For better or worse, it doesn't, and I won't, but that I was even considering it struck me as rather unusual, before I realised that I've "double dipped" on games several times before:

Mario 64: N64 and DS versions. Mario 64 is one of my all-time favourite games and one of the few decent titles on the DS at launch. No brainer there.

Warcraft III: Standard and Collector's Editions. Having missed out at release, I stumbled across a copy of the CE several years later. Blizzard's CEs are always top notch, when the time comes the Starcraft II CE will be mine regardless of how many people I have to kill for it.

World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade: Standard and Collector's Editions. Same story as above, except weeks in place of years. Thankfully I managed to offload the Standard Edition key to a friend.

Half-Life 2: Silver Edition and The Orange Box. Wasn't by choice, HL2 is only a middling FPS, but it was the only way to obtain Team Fortress 2 and Portal at the time. I offloaded the additional key to unimatrix7 on a whim, as by that time anyone I knew who was actually interested in the game already owned it.

Donkey Kong Country: SNES and GBA. No real story there.

Through a confusing mix-up some years ago I also have multiple copies of Goldeneye 007 and Ocarina of Time here, but I only personally bought one of each.

I've been toying with picking up Mass Effect on the PC, even though I've already got it for the 360.

WoW and TBC: Bought it a second time for an alt account after the Recruit A Friend offer. 3x XP for leveling a couple of alts, and free levels for my priest were too good to pass up. Plus, that mount looks kinda nifty.

Unreal Tournament: The first CD of my original copy exploded in the CD-ROM while installing. This was my first 50x CD-ROM. I left the game to install, and heard what sounded like a plate shattering from the other room. Went back to check, and there were fragments of the CD in the tray.

Diablo II and LoD: Found out my first disc, the one with the CD key, was missing when I went to install Diablo II recently. I bought a key from Blizzard's site. My LoD disc didn't work with the digitally purchased D2, so I ended up buying that again, too. I didn't mind too much since I got the Starcraft expac for free when I added my Starcraft key to my Blizzard store profile.

Orange Box: I had Half-Life and episode 1 for the PC. Bought Orange Box to get Episode 2 and Portal.

Only one I can think off of the top of my head is Rainbow Six Vegas 1...I had it for PC and then brought it for X Box 360 so I could play with a friend online.

When I moved to XP, I ended up getting Quake I, II, & III as a cheap package deal. I'm about to end up on Vista, so I'll see what I double dip again soon(ish).

HL2 a "middling FPS"? Fail. :p

I think the only game I've double-dipped on was SimCity 4. I ended up getting the Deluxe Edition used because I couldn't find Rush Hour.

I've double-dipped several Mario titles on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS for portability reasons. Super Mario All-Stars had a new game included plus upgraded graphics, and the Zelda compilation on GameCube had two NES games that I had sold. Zelda: A Link to the Past on GBA had Four Swords.

I can't recall any time where I bought the exact same game without getting something of real value that justified the purchase price.

The only game where I've bought the exact same thing twice is for Diablo II, because my first copy was an early version that didn't support the mac. However, I also have Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI for both the PS1 and GBA.

I alos have Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 and 2007 (I had 2006 but sold it). That's practically a double-dip.

Edit: I also have Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Tiberian sun, and Red Alert 2 as well as the "C&C - The First Decade" collection. I bought it because it contained some expansions I was missing, as well as C&C Generals.

I think the only double dipping I've done on a game was when I bought the Unreal pack on Steam... I haven't seen my old UT or UT2k4 discs in quite a while and the pack was so cheap that I couldn't resist.

I wouldn't double dip on a game unless it was a case where buying the original game and an expansion pack together were cheaper than buying the expansion pack. Haven't stumbled across that yet, so I haven't double dipped on a game. But I hardly do that for movies. And I hardly buy games anymore.

If I can dump Lego Star Wars II, I'll pick up the game that has both games on it. Otherwise, I'm not going to pay to download something onto Wii Virtual Console that plays perfectly fine on my 8-bit Nintendo.

the lego starwars games (the original saga and the complete saga for my 360, which also means a double dip on achievements)

I'll admit it. I've bought games on game consoles then bought them for my PC if they had been modded.

the lego starwars games (the original saga and the complete saga for my 360, which also means a double dip on achievements)

I bought the first and second ones on Gamecube, then I bought LEGO Star Wars 2 on Xbox 360, then I bought The Complete Saga on 360. And I don't even really like Star Wars - I just love those games.

As far as other double dips...I'm guilty of a few.

Sonic 1 & 2: I had this on Mega Drive, then I had Sonic Jam (compilation) on Saturn, the Sonic Mega Collection on PS2, the Sega Mega Drive Collection on PS2, and finally I bought the XBLA iterations.

Final Fantasy 7: I bought an extra copy of this in case my original got chewed up or something ;)

Valkyrie Profile 2: See above :D

Shadow of the Colossus: They were on a throwout table somewhere, so I bought two duplicate copies. They were dirt cheap, and given the lovely cardboard packaging (complete with art cards and what have you), it was a shame to let them sit there. Now I don't know what to do with them.

Resident Evil: I love this game so much I bought it on PS1, Gamecube, and DS.

Disgaea: Hour/Afternoon of Darkness: I had it on PS2 for yonks, then decided I wanted the portable version with the extra content as well.

I'm planning on buying the PS3 version of Eternal Sonata when it comes out, too.

I have on a few occasions.

Half-Life 2 - Bought the pack with Half-Life 2, Episode One and Half-Life: Source then bought the Orange Box for Episode 2 and Portal. I did take advantage of the offer to give away my extra copies of HL2 and Ep1.

Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 - I bought them both day of release but I've lost my copies so I bought them from Steam.

Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas - Bought them for the PS2 and then later on the PC.

Star Wars: KoTOR - Bought for Xbox (never managed to finish it) and the PC.

I'm not counting cases where I bought the game and then bought a portable version like FIFA 08.

Kindof a double dip. Kinda not. I bought Marvel Ultimate Alliance for my Wii when it came out. When I later bought an Xbox 360, M:UA came bundled with it. My first 360 was a lemon so I sent it back for a replacement but forgot to put the games back in, so I ended up with another copy of M:UA (and Forza 2 as well.) I ended up trading in the Wii version and one of the 360 versions to Gamestop. I kept the other 360 version (better graphics, dowloadable content, achievements, and the Wii controls were ass. The choice of which one to keep wasn't hard)

I don't have a lot of games (around a dozen) and only have the PC and a PS2 but I have the GTA games, Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2, Max payne 1 & 2 and Star Trek Elite Force for both PS2 and PC. I like to use cheats and game Trainers and I find that you get a different experience playing on each version of the game.
