DOOM 4 officially announced

My second PC had a 3D accellerator (a crap one) in 1999, after Quake had run its course.

Id hasn't done much of anything since then.

Quake III was released in late 1999 and remains the finest FPS for competitive 1v1 play in existence. The engine was also used for everything from Jedi Knight II to Call of Duty.

It's funny because UE3 is making me miss the days when everything used Q3. At least the models didn't look plasticy.

That's really funny actually... because the most obvious cases I'm aware of of plasticy characters were in Doom 3 and Prey ;)

The cause isn't the engines, it's the difficulty of getting the specular on skin correct without making the shader be too crazy.

I'm getting really sick of settings being milked to this extent. Okay, expecting stunning originality every time is too much but the current climate (in all media) of endless sequels and remakes and reiteration after reiteration is just getting ridiculous. Do we really need another Doom? To think that something I enjoyed so much when it came out has become something so stale and uninteresting. Please, no more Doom. It's had its day.
