DOOM 4 officially announced

Here's hoping they learn some serious lessons from Doom 3.

My thoughts on it:

First 30 minutes of the game: Brilliant, immersive, totally spooky, gorgeous to look at.

Remainder of the game - you know, the actual combat part: predictable, idiotic enemies that jump out of hidden wall panels and teleport in behind you. Horrible, monotonous, corridor crawling level design. Transparent desperation on the part of the developers to make you "scared" by their lighting model by continuously forcing you to switch between your gun and your flashlight - seriously, is there no duct tape on mars?

I'm so frustrated by Doom 3 because it had such potential, and such a brilliant opening sequence on the base (before the attack). But ultimately, it just turned out to be an uncreative arrangement of cow dung presented in a very pretty package.

Doom 3 was a horrible corridor shooter that looked like it was designed when the first 2 were, when the game engines didn't allow for more.

Yeah, with games like Bioshock and CoD4 raising the FPS bar, ID had better bring us something amazing with Doom 4 or they should not even bother trying. The last thing they need to do is further tarnish their formerly pristine record.

My first thought is that Doom is such an outdated concept in this day and age. However, if they can innovate, rather than "stick to their roots", I might be interested. Of course it might also just be so darn pretty I have to get it anyway.

I'm surprised they're even bothering given Rage was their big first "next gen" announcement.

One piece of advice I might give them is to look at the game's total history. Check out each and every port for extras they threw on for whatever reason, then incorporate them back in to the game. The N64 version had some unusual bosses, IIRC, and back in the day, Doom came out on just about everything you could name. There has to be tens of ideas just waiting to be mined from their own works.

Honestly, I think the idea can work well if they just try and take it the Bio-Shock route. As far as atmosphere and feel are concerned, the two games were pretty similar so we know that the core of doom can still work. Advance the game play and they should be set.

They need to...

* Get rid of scripted elements.

* Smarter AI

* Full CO-OP added

* Better spooky atmosphere like F.E.A.R

* More variation in level designs

and please don't make it like BIOSHOCK, that game was so over-rated.

Except that what made Bioshock so good wasn't just the atmosphere... it was the narrative. To be honest, whenever I think of them trying to weave a serious narrative into Doom, I start giggling.

^Right on. It's a game about space demons from Hell.

I really don't think Doom succeeds when it tries to take itself too seriously.

(Having said that, I do think the DOOM 3 atmosphere could've worked brilliantly had the game itself been better. Doom works okay when it's like ALIEN, as well as working okay when it's balls to the wall run & gun, like Doom 1 & 2).

I think that DOOM 4 should abandon any real pretense at being scary and go to being an awesome sci-fi action game. Maybe they could take the narrative from the Doom novels (which I remember enjoying).

DOOM should try and do what F.E.A.R did so well and get inside the minds of the players.

I'm kinda "meh" about this announcement. I've never been a huge fps fan, and sort of missed out on the Doom/Quake craze of the 90's. My first PC was a 75Mhz PC that in 1995 couldn't run Doom very well. My second PC had a 3D accellerator (a crap one) in 1999, after Quake had run its course.

Id hasn't done much of anything since then.

You're almost there. Two of the biggest inspirations for Doom were Alien and Evil Dead. Doom 3 had entirely far too much Alien, and nowhere near enough Evil Dead.

Doom needs to be truly knee-deep in the dead.

Nope, I disagree. The narrative was great and its what made Bioshock the best game of the year but it isnt necessary to having a great experience. What they SHOULD do is play to the franchises strengths. yeah, Doom isnt going to have a kick ass story. Who cares? Make it a creepy experience and use the games atmosphere to tell the tale (something bioshock did extremely well). It should be something along the lines of a first person Resident Evil, another franchise with only a decent story yet uses the atmosphere and setting to full effect.

I didn't say it was necessary to have a great experience... I meant that it's necessary if you're going to be using Bioshock as an example, which is what you suggested. The atmosphere in Bioshock was only as effective as it was because of its narrative.

I know thats what you said, but i'm saying I dont agree with you

As far as I'm concerned there are dozens of factors that made bioshock a great game. Tight gameplay, customization, intelligent enemies, atmosphere, narrative, etc. I think it is perfectly acceptable to state that Bioshock set a new standard as to how to handle atmosphere in a game and that it is important for Doom 4 to try and do the same.

Well, I kinda enjoyed Doom 3. The first hour of the game kept me on the edge of my seat. (I take it slowly, hence the first hour) After that, it became repetitive and a bit boring. The level's all started to look alike. I didn't like that the game cuts to a 'movie scene' when a boss appears. It gives you time to prepare for the fight. The original Doom and Doom 2 were better in that sense, you would enter a big, strange looking room and suddenly you stumbled upon a nightmarish boss.

Doom 3 did have some neat stuff though. I liked the scientists logs, and the voice effects in some of the levels (demonic laughing).
