Actually a good chunk (all?) of the Time Trap ship were rejected designs from Beyond the Farthest Star. Bob Kline (I hope I have the right guy) was told to design a derelict space ship without being given any details of the script. At one point he assumed it would be another Fed ship. Talk about the road not traveled!Funny, I thought it was drawn to look like the designer was a parsec high on drugs.
It's possible that the panels are color coded in different shades to simplify replacement somehow.I think we should fire all the painters at space docks. They are incapable at matching a light grey paint shade from one panel/section of the hull with the next ones. When did a uniform hull paint job go out of style?![]()
You know, my thought once I'd modeled it was "Great. It looks like a Starfleet School Bus"I still think they look like Starfleet is shipping people in a space-going boxcar
I still want to follow his lead (and my own lead with my previous TOS ships) to not depict any visible weapons on the Miranda, since there were no visible weapon hardpoints on the filming model of the Enterprise. So that negates placing a torpedo launcher on the rollbar, as on the Reliant. So I've decided on a deflector/sensor pod and will experiment with a few different designs. I was even thinking about adding in some of those smaller, recessed dishes (like I depicted on the Starliner) into the eventual deflector housing, flanking each side of the larger dish.Niiice! I'm also a fan of Prologic's take on the Miranda, though I prefer the direction you're taking it by making it more of a direct "TOS version" of the canon ship, thus making it more plausible as a pre-refit version of the same craft.![]()
Oh, I'm building this on top of the same schematic I used when building the Miranda-class model for Star Trek: Online. So I'm following the angles as closely as I can. When I created my Avenger, I was bound by Surya’s lines. I just extended the hangar aft, opened up the hull to expose the venting apparatus, swapped pylons, and added a rollbar. It worked because Surya was originally conceived with Reliant’s lines in mind. Whatever you do, I would recommend similar thinking - keep the angles close to Reliant’s.
I admit I'm going to have to prove myself wrong as well! Venturing outside of what's been established, either by the show or another artist, is always a point of anxiety for me. Although I've gotten more comfortable as of late, I still feel that my raw design skills are weak compared to my skills at crafting something that's already been designed. I doubt my ability to come up with an original roll bar that fits the TOS aesthetic, but I need to stop all the worry and trust all the people that have told me recently how well I nail said aesthetic. It will be cool to see how you design the pylons. For me, I think the roll bar works fantastically well on the Reliant, but (so far) I've never liked it as much on TOS era ships. But I wouldn't be surprised if you're about to prove me wrong!
