Donner Hoping for X-Men: First Class Franchise

X-Men: First Class?

Not X-Men Origins: Cyclops, Jean Gray, Storm, Professor X and Friends? :)

They gotta go all the way. Disregard the the first four Wolver...er...X-Men movies (a classic case of the law of diminishing returns) and have Cyke, Beast, Marvel Girl, Iceman, and Angel. Black and gold uniforms, new Brotherhood, and and some actual superheroics.

Yeah, they should save this for later...do a total reboot of the franchise with the original five, who have become popular enough in their own right.

Don't continue to build on this sorry excuse of a X-universe.

Heck, they couldn't even use Iceman or Angel as it currently stands because they have different origins in the movies.

As I mentioned in a previous post, they should do one or two movies with the original crew and do an "Empire Strikes Back"-like climax where the old team is decimated and a new one is formed with you know who...

^^^I disagree. Keep the original five as long as you can. Wolverine has had enough movies. Let this franchise stand on its own for a while and don't use it as a segue to him.

I nominate Kristen Stewart as Marvel Girl.

I just have one hope for this: can Cyclops have some, y'know, balls this time around? Please??

As with everything else, the test will be in the execution, so I'll reserve judgement. Could be great, could be a total mess.

I'm not sure how they'll be able to re-cast the original actors (no Tom Hardy for Prof X, anyway!). I suppose if they ever get round to doing the Magneto movie, they'll already have their young Xavier. But who could be a young Kelsey Grammer? David Hyde Pierce?! lol.

I don't see how Beast could be a contemporary of Cyke and Jean in this continuity. Even under the make-up, he looked more like a contemporary of Magneto and Xavier than the younger ones. Perhaps he'll be a young teacher as oppose to a student.

I have to say, the way that the X-movies seem to only be going backwards - with a Wolverine prequel, a possible Magneto prequel and now this - rather than forwards, is very disappointing. Why not just make X-Men 4? Can't be totally impossible to clear up any mess that X3 left and move forward from there.

I'm huge fan of The Lee/Kirby vision. Especially their X-Men vision. I'm a huge fan of the First 5(well...not Angel). I'm a bloodthirsty, fanatical Scott and Jean shipper to the point where every time I see a Grant Morrison X-Men book in a store I have to fight every instinct in me to not rip it apart with my teeth and bare hands. So I'd be all for a movie like this. Especially if they get Kelsey Grammar and Patrick Stewart back. They were born to play those characters.

If they treat it as a reboot I'm all for it. Because most of Marvel's reboots have been far superior then the previous versions. They all haven't done as well at the box office, but that's another matter. Wolverine is fine when he's just a another character. As it has been said, the problem with the previous films is that it was all about him. It's become so bad that in the new cartoon shows they have to give him top billing. "Wolverine and The X-Men" indeed. Certain characters such as Cyclops, and to a certain extent, Rogue and Storm were shit on in order to make Logan look good. Of course Berry and Paquin were given actual material to work with, and came up short. Especially Berry. Marsden wasn't even given that. And as proven by Superman Returns, he could and should have been an excellent Cyclops.

The problem this film is going to go up against is the fact that the huge popularity of the previous films made it all but impossible for any casual viewer to give a shit about any other character other then Wolverine. Scott Summers reputation is pretty ruined now. So if they treat it as a prequel, and not a reboot, they're in for a world of suck. And even if it is a reboot, I think it will suck because Fox is behind it and, as a rule, they make shit movies. Just look at The Fantastic Four.

But I heard Josh Schwartz is writing the script. And if it's anyone I have faith in to do it right, it's him. He excels at Teen Drama(The OC, Gossip Girl). But he's also good at light-hearted, romantic, fun, romps with a lot of heart and soul that is way better then it has any right to be. Namely my favorite show, Chuck. Richard Donner I could take or leave. I liked the first Superman movie, even though the plot was stupid and Gene Hackman played Lex Luthor as a used car salesman. The second one, not so much.

Apparentally at the end of Wolverine, Cyclops and others meet Xavier, who creates a first class out of them. This might be what Donner means

I also think part of the problem with the first class concept is that it isn't very marketable. If you look at the X-men comic franchise, most of the original X-men stuff doesn't sell well compared to stuff post-1975. Even X-Factor, which featured the original crew, wasn't that huge compared to the ongoing X-men monthly, and after a few years the team was folded back into the original X-men (Granted, X-factor still goes on, but the post-original five incarnations of the title are nearly completely different).

Two Words: Iron Man.

If it's in the right hands, and marketed in a way that it can distance itself from the Singerverse, it can succeed. The negative buzz regarding the Wolverine movie is helping its chance.
