Domestically Highest Earning Star Trek Movie

Figures are not adjusted for inflation.

TMP took about $240mil & TWOK took about $190mil in today's dollars.

Star Trek is about 5th right now behind TMP, TWOK, TSFS & TVH in terms of North American box office.

Cheers

Alex

It won't be long before its no1 after inflation. Its surley now gonna take more than $250

I guess the thing to remember is how BIG Star Trek was during the first 4 movies.

Now, after 20-odd years, we finally get a Star Trek movie that is proving the franchise is back to being as popular as it ever was.

Even though DS9 is my favorite Trek television series, I have to admit the archetype of the Big 3--Heart, Logic and Humanism--plays the easiest to the public. It is elegant in its simplicity, and yet capable of producing complex stories.

It NEVER was this popular. Period. The people who used to beat your Trekkie arse and stole your milk money in middle school are ponying up for a ticket.

The whole thing is kind of weirding me out. I'm not sure if I'm pissed about the bandwagon jumping after 40 years, or feeling all righteously "I was into it when it wasn't cool. At All."

Adjusted for inflation, it's either fifth or sixth I think as of today. Also, once Tuesday's totals are in, it should pass Wolverine, and much sooner then I expected!

Here are the adjusted for inflation figures from the following link:
http://boxoffice.com/featured_stories/2009/05/the-history-of-trek.php

Adjusted for inflation: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979): $34,668,706 (opening weekend)/ $239,115,674 (cume)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982): $35,038,451 / $192,290,437
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock (1984): $35,629,102 / $163,237,856
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986): $32,671,686 / $212,328,919
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989): $31,267,457 / $93,951,918
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991): $30,976,050 / $127,720,425
Star Trek: Generations (1994): $39,707,107 / $129,980,545
Star Trek: First Contact (1996): $49,896,339 / $149,493,266
Star Trek: Insurrection (1998): $33,761,058 / $107,451,468
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002): $22,918,195 / $53,387,173

So Star Trek's current domestic take of $152,175,578 would place it at #5. Just shy by about $9M to take the #4 position.

Let's toss more wonk on the fire...

Wrath of Khan achieved its final figures after ten weeks at the box office.
The figure given After its third weekend was 60% of total.

The Search For Spock achieved its final figures after eight weeks at the box office.
The figure given After its third weekend was 65% of total.

The Voyage Home achieved its final figures after thirteen weeks at the box office.
The figure given After its third weekend was 45% of total.

The Final Frontier achieved its final figures after five weeks at the box office.
The figure given After its third weekend was 84% of total.

...what a mess. Lets just stop there.

So - lesse...

With a measily two weeks to go by, Star Trek's second week drop matches
Search For Spock and Generations - 43%. Does better than The Voyage Home, which had a - 47% Does way better than Final Frontier, at - 59%, and The Undiscovered Country, at - 57%

Star Trek does much worse than "Wrath of Khan," at -34%. Ever so slightly worse than "First Contact," at -42%

Gee. This is exciting.

I guess it would be nice if we had more than a week's change in data to run this analysis...

So. We can say that, since the drop for Search For Spock and Generations on the second weekend were the same, and both ran about 7.5 weeks, and both achieved about 65% by their third weekend, we could toss - very conservatively - another 40M on the current figure to cover up through the coming weekend - bringing us up to 195M - what the heck, I'm a fan - lets make it 200M, then use that as a 65% of total - 280M. Domestic.

When it is finally the absolute record holder will we see an end to the daily box office updates?

Has anyone ever heard how much they have spent on the marketing for this movie? I have been so curious about that because it seemed like it was everywhere but I haven't heard an answer on that.

The Motion Picture made $240,905,144 in 2008 dollars in US take. Worldwide it's gross was $407,080,519 in 2008 dollars. So far, that's the biggest Trek film in terms of ticket sales. And it showed on only 857 screens.

The new movie is showing on 3800+ screens....nearly five times as many. Given that it does appeal more to kids than the previos films did....repeat kid customers could definitely raise the take for it...just look at what kid sales does for Star Wars. If the fans keep going it may make 400+mil worldwide...only time will tell.
