I'm having a hard time imagining a role for which a Doll would be programmed to be anything *but* self-confident.

The role Sierra had to play wasn't particularly the role model of self-confidence.

I kept expecting Sierra to suddenly "activate" and become super-bodyguard-defender chick. She was sent in as "backup" after all, right? So there must have been some contingency plan for Sierra to suddenly switch-on and protect the client.

Loved her Australian accent! Yow!
 
Better than expected, I'm not enthralled but I'm still watching.

So far we've seen Dolls associated with short-term roles and assignments, I'd put (a small amount of) money on there being long-term Dolls around also, likely associated with the operation of the Dollhouse itself.

Her name is Miracle Laurie. This is her second acting job so I'm not sure how familiar she's going to be to you.

She was originally cast as November, another Doll/Active but that character was dropped and she was given the part of Helo's neighbour designed to make Helo look as dumb as possible.

I gave this an average. I really could have done without the singing. It was painful.

Also, can next week's villain not be a crazy white man ? I get it Joss, you don't like your own kind very much.

Maybe, no real idea as to how he ties in yet. For all we know he could be a recent acquisition. I was thinking more along the lines of the handler, programmer, doctor or director. If the Dollhouse is being run the way it is because those in charge are programmed to run it that way, that would explain some of the oddities in the setup, whilst opening up a bunch of other questions of course. :lol:
 
Wow, maybe I was just remembering her from the last episode, as I certainly didn't see her single previous appearance in a show I've never heard of ;) // BTW the ratings continue to drop off, it's gone 4.72 > 4.22 > 4.13. At this rate the 13th episode will get a 1.18 million rating :p
 
I found this episode more engaging than I did this week's BSG, although the storytelling is a bit too pat (by which comparison BSG just about always wins).

The genius programmer kid is a dick. This is a good sign.

Amy Acker will turn out to be an Active. :lol:

I liked the guy calling Helo's character "Agent Mulder," even if it's a little bit of what Samuel T. Cogley calls "taking the sting out. :lol:


This series won't go past thirteen weeks, if that long - people are going to be challenged to find a character to identify with and to relate anyone's situation to anything they actually know.

Hell, the "watching live" thread here was dead. That's a real bad sign.

A pity, IMAO.
 
I've had fun with the show. I guess I come into it with low expectations and just relax. Little things like the nod at the end are great, signs that things are developing in the background. I also assume this will be a one season effort though.

Is it just me or does Sierra look just like the Gelfling from The Dark Crystal?
 
I'm enjoying the show. Its not yet up to Joss's other shows, but then neither were they in their first three episodes (confusing phraseology, sorry). People seemed determined to be down on this one but its been pretty solid so far, and this episode was the best of the three.
 
Yeah, I'm just letting it roll over me and enjoying the parts that are good. I have no hope that it will last long enough to have a chance to become truly great, because 1) it's too far from that now and 2) it's doomed.

I think the problem is that everyone, network and audience alike, is looking for the "instant hit" ala Lost, Heroes, etc.

Dollhouse is a very different show. It is taking its time to establish itself, its characters, and its tone. Where others say it is slow, I say it is different: a show that is more interested in telling a story than jumping into ratings-generating senseless action.

Give it a chance to grow. Sit down with a bowl of popcorn and enjoy that we get an hour of storytelling that is not a cookie-cutter stamp of everything else out there.

Well, I can imagine many. Most of them have to do with a rich sleezeball wanting a perfect date, and HIS idea of the perfect girl is a submissive, weak, damsel-in-distress type, who would give him a chance to assert his own superiority.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if most weren't that type of fantasy.

I read a Whedon interview recently in Salon where he says Episode 6 or so is where they really found the potential for the show and it heats up. I'm enjoying the show enough to wait it out, but six episodes is asking a lot of patience for fence sitters with so much else going on.

His words:

I think the first episodes are trying to get people to understand and accept how this world works. But the show really finds itself in the second half. It's really where we start to go, "Ohhhhhh, we can do thiiiis. Right, this is why we showed up!" And so I'm hoping people will stick with it.

"Stage Fright" was a mixed bag for me. I found the character interactions and things going on around the main plot to be very interesting, as well as some of the subtle character development (such as it is with this premise) we see from Echo. Even so, I found the main thrust of the episode, the "singer trapped by her fame" to be so cliche and clumsy as to be near unwatchable. Not sure what to rate this, so I'll give it an Average.

I hope it survives so long then, so that we can at least get a glimpse at what they want to do with this show.
 
Quite frankly I'm starting to get a little pissed at the show because despite the fact that I know I shouldn't get attached to it in any way given it's a Joss Whedon show on Fox I'm starting to like it.

Don't get me wrong, it is isn't anything approaching Firefly (or Buffy Season 1 for that matter) but I can see where threads are startng to develop and how those could lead into some pretty intriguing stories.

Anyway, other than the singer being incredibly hot, the pop-star stuff sucked, but the other elements made it an average episode. Not as good as last weeks, for sure.

I know I'll regret it, but I'm going to stick with it for now and see where it goes.
