I really empathise with both angles of this argument. On the one hand, I don't want any overt advertisement in a TV show I'm watching (say, a lingering shot of a blood-spattered Coke bottle on Dexter); but on the other hand I like to respect artistic integrity. And on the other other hand; not many people who insert the lingering shots of products are trying to be the next Andy Warhol; and more to the point it annoys me as the person who is looking for entertainment in these programs.See, I don't understand this... because it sounds to me that these rules are basically dictating creative decisions.I believe that's what the new European product placement rules are pretty much going to say. If it's natural and doesn't distract, then it's allowed. If it's forced and interrupts the flow, it's not allowed.
This boils down to me considering the law in this case a wise suggstion that I'd like shows I watch to adhere to; but remaining on the fence about its implementation as a rule.
And now a word from David Lynch.
