Does US TV not have Product Placement rules?

I believe that's what the new European product placement rules are pretty much going to say. If it's natural and doesn't distract, then it's allowed. If it's forced and interrupts the flow, it's not allowed.
See, I don't understand this... because it sounds to me that these rules are basically dictating creative decisions.
I really empathise with both angles of this argument. On the one hand, I don't want any overt advertisement in a TV show I'm watching (say, a lingering shot of a blood-spattered Coke bottle on Dexter); but on the other hand I like to respect artistic integrity. And on the other other hand; not many people who insert the lingering shots of products are trying to be the next Andy Warhol; and more to the point it annoys me as the person who is looking for entertainment in these programs.

This boils down to me considering the law in this case a wise suggstion that I'd like shows I watch to adhere to; but remaining on the fence about its implementation as a rule.

And now a word from David Lynch. :)

Who can forget the "you can borrow my Yaris" line from Smallville? They might as well have broken the fourth wall and have Welling walk towards the camera saying "Hi, I'm Tom Welling from TV's Smallville. When I'm not zipping around at super speed saving Metropolis and Smallville, I like nothing better than to zip around town in my new Toyota Yaris...".

Actually Tom Welling drove around in a brand new Toyota Tundra in the same episode. Allison Mack got the Yaris.

Though the worst product placement on Smallville was the Stride Gum from this season. They even included the slogan into the dialogue.

Sometimes product placement can be amusing. I got a kick out of Snakes on a Plane. "We know you were at the scene of the crime. We found your DNA on this." (pulls out a can of Red Bull).

the best is still Wayne's World 1...

"It's sad how some people will only do things for the money," say Garthin Reebok shoes, hat, tracksuit and bandana...
