Does Trek XI polarize the Trek fanbase..?

It sure as shit polarizes the fanbase! Hell! We knew that even before the movie was released!
There's a very good point made by ShinGoji at his website on the movie and why he won't go to see it.

There's no way to deny it doesn't polarize the fanbase! There's plenty of arguments going on! If you want to call it having to be 50-50 then I guess it isn't polarizing, but there are some old fans around who reject this new idea utterly. I didn't reject ST5 utterly, I just thought it was crap along the lines of
the Comes and the Yangs.

Paramount obviously thinks that alienating the loyalists is a small price to pay for the potential gains of the youngest generation of new fans and the older fans that WILL convert to their new franchise.

Yes it does polarize it greatly. In fact, I think JJ takes away a lot of those who could have otherwise supported him by destroying vulcan. He made a great movie, but that particular aspect was like a big F-you to Star Trek fans.

Then I would like an even bigger F-ing in the next one.

As long as they take this new Star Trek to its logical conclusion and don't wimp out.

I don't want a goody-two-shoes Federation. I want to see them make a power grab for Romulan territory. That is exactly what any empire would do in this case. Even a benevolent one like the Federation.

I'll be 40 next year which means that I wasn't alive when ToS aired. I took my 14 year old son to see the movie. He is too young to remember any series as new except ENT. So who is the target fanbase? Me who only goes to one or two movies a year or the younger crowd like my son. This is their version of Star Trek and it is a good one. When TNG came out we found there was room for all. It will be the same here.

I'd be surprised if the number of hard-core fans who utterly reject JJ's take number more than a thousand or so. It only took a few hundred BSG fans to create an internet shitstorm that was reported on by several media outlets, after all.
