Does Trek XI polarize the Trek fanbase..?

Yes quite. Polarisation implies, to me at least, some sort of significant split. The fanbase mostly seems to love this movie, those that don't are just screaming particularly loudly this time.

Indeed, most people seem reasonably happy to delighted with the new film.

They just can't be bothered to shout and scream about it.

Are you kidding? Episodes of ToS "polarized" the fan base. As to canon... they have been messing with the story of James R. Kirk since "Where No Man has Gone Before." I think Trek fans (myself included) just love to argue, speculate and yeah even nitpick a little.

Speaking of that episode... Might be cool to see a revamp of that. Since Mitchell might not be on the ship this time... maybe Spock... I wonder if Quinto has the skills to play a Spock infected with that kind of power.

The fan base has always been polarized and always will be.

Yes it does polarize it greatly. In fact, I think JJ takes away a lot of those who could have otherwise supported him by destroying vulcan. He made a great movie, but that particular aspect was like a big F-you to Star Trek fans.

Really?
It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

It has been the least polarizing Trek film in a long time. A sizable majority of Trek fans enjoy the movie or at least some aspects of it. There are lots of things to discuss, especially with time travel and recasting, but that just shows that Trek fans are passionate about the details, not that they are divided.

If anything it's bringing bitterly opposed enemies together. Star Trek: the movie of peace and reconciliation.

This is what's called an echo chamber. If you venture outside, you'll find reaction is almost unabashedly positive. Reviews are off the charts positives (Rotten tomatoes at something like 95%). Every other message board is filled with people who were casual Trek fans at best (seen some of the movies or TNG, passing familiarity with iconic characters) raving about how much they loved the movie.

Another thing is that a lot of the negative comments are a few people dominating the discussion, like if you magically removed all of T'Paul's posts, there goes a big chunk of negative comments right there

I think he got himself magically removed.

It seems to me, that more so than ANY other Trek film people are extremely divided over Trek XI. It has already led to heated discussions... Some people call it the best Trek film ever made, others call it a catastrophy for the future of Trek... Some say it's an alternate timeline, while others claim it erases 40 years of Trek canon.... Does Trek XI polarize the fanbase..?

I don't see it. Not even close. Most of the people like this movie. If 8 or 9 out of 10 fans are posting to say they like the movie, that to me is not polarization. I think we can handle 10 or 20% not liking the movie. Seriously, we can handle it. Opinions don't need to be monolithic.

It's time for the people (talking generally now, not necessarily to you) who want to see polarization everwyhere to give it up. This isn't 2005 anymore. Those days are gone. Seriously. Give it up. This is nowhere near what the ENT forum was and you know it.

You can't just go and point to one or two out of 10 and then throw up your hands in disgust and say "There's polarization everywhere!" because that's not true. Polarization is when half the fans hate the movie and the other half love it. Polarization is 50/50, 45/55, hell, maybe even I'll even go so far as to say 60/40. But when it's 80/20 with 80% in favor of the movie, that's not polarization. That's simply not what polarization is.

Meh. This is nothing compared to the shit-storm caused by the RDM BSG revival.

I don't think that Pine or Quinto got any death threats, for example. Nor have I seen any avatars depicting grevious bodily harm to JJ Abrams, Orci or Kurtzman.

No, it doesn't. While the very hardliners hate it, they're the ones who wouldn't have been satisfied with anything, with some preferring that Trek just have died. I think the majority of fans like it.

To me, DS9, Voyager and especially Enterprise were all much more polarizing.

The poll clearly says no. A few may turn up the "hate" volume awfully high, but the numbers do not back them.

Think of it like a very busy supermarket. Over in the corner one 6 year-old is throwing a screaming blue tantrum and everyone else is ignoring it.

On the contrary: I think it was an incredibly bold move. This goes to show that our good man JJ has some faith in our imagination.

Then I would like an even bigger F-ing in the next one.

Even if as many as 10% of the hardcore fans are disaffected, that pales in comparison to how many new fans, casual and serious (judging by allegorical evidence of DVD sales) alike, have been drawn to Trek.
