does the film heighten your appreciation of TOS?

OP: No, not at all.

ST11 is a completely different beast. Everything that's garnering attention for this new film (non-stop action, great effects, etc), simply aren't in TOS. TOS is certainly more action oriented than some of the other series, but nothing else in Trek comes close to ST11 in these areas. But any new Trek fan (those only familiar with this film) will be shocked at how completely different everything is. And no, I'm not talking about the uber nitpicking stuff you hear from Trek fans.

But a simple...
"Where's the action?"
"Oh, there's a fight scene coming up."
"When? They've just been talking forever."
"In another 10-15 minutes."
"Oh. I'm going to the store. Want anything?"

The closest would have to be ENT as it's got more modern effects, more action than most other series, and in Season 4 at least, better writing than ST11 (except the finale).

ST11 makes me want to watch all the other stuff to remind myself what good (or at least better) writing is. I want to get to that philosophical heart of Trek that was missing in ST11 as well. The altruism, the heroism, the humanism. And yes, a bit of the old morality play.

Note: Hulu also has the entire TOS run as well, and that's free. (Unless you count the grey-matter to goo and aliens sucking out your skull-beef.)

Flawed as they may have been, I'll take Berman Trek over Orci/Kurtzman Trek.

Woah, let's not get hasty here. Poorly written and fun is at least preferable to poorly written and dull any day of the week.
I didn't find certain episodes of ENT poorly written or dull--the Xindi-focused episodes of season three, some of the season four trilogies.

In fact, I'd argue that The Council/Countdown/Zero Hour makes for a better action adventure film than XI and I'd argue that The Forge/Awakening/Kir'Shara made for a more effective prequel that put to great effect many elements from TOS other than just to serve as namedrops.

I've always loved the characters and a number of the stories. I'm a bigger fan of TNG and DS9, but I've always appreciated TOS for what it did during its time. Its effects and costumes don't date well, but the writing (for the most part) is timeless.

It has heightened my appreciation of the characters in TOS. We see Spock's rather intense love for his mother come out in TOS in The Naked Time and Journey to Babel but now that there is a third episode (the movie) that reveals Spock's relationship with his mother it adds to the TOS eps. I had the same experience watching ENT, what we saw there added to what we saw of Vulcans (and Andorians) in other series.

Also it's just gotten really interested in Spock again and I find myself paying more attention to him in TOS.

Yes. After watching the film, all I want to watch now is TOS. Not even TNG, DS9 or anything else. So I'm fortunate Netflix has Star Trek Remastered Season 1 available for instant watch. :D

J.

Yup! Been watching the last few nights! And I love and appreciate the updated F/X. Great job people! Watched the episode last night when they time travel to earth in the 1960s and take on board a fighter pilot. The scenes in the sky were so much better; it was great.

And the scene around the sun was much improved.

Obviously i've seen all the films, but I had only seen random episodes of the series previously on TV when I was a kid.

I have now started watching TOS the whole way through from the start, and rather enjoying it too.

No kidding. Without space hippies, the giant white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, or a shoot out at the OK Corral, how could anybody possibly enjoy this film? I mean, for god's sake, Kirk didn't talk even one computer to death. I miss the "cerebral" stuff.

A friend of mine, who is no way a Star Trek fan saw the new film with me and he loved it. Now he wants to watch TOS. I want to get him started asap, but I'm unsure if I should lend him my remastered or my originals. The originals have done me good for many years, but the remastered has the best picture quality plus the new effects may help a newbie get into star trek easier.

Back on subject the new film has made me want re-watch TOS all over again. :techman:

yeah i have also encountered that too.
people who want to know more about tos due to the film.
and yeah i have wanted to go back and revisit some episodes like babel and the early first season episodes.

No, not really. My appreciation of TOS couldn't be any higher. :D

Me too...it's impossible for me to hold this show in any higher regard than I currently do.

I have to admit that after watching the film I wanted to watch TOS again.

I know! I wanted to run home and watch a TOS...and I would of, but it was so late and I had to get up at the crack o' dawn that I refrained.

Now to the people who are saying that thier friends, whoever wants to explore TOS because of the movie and they're not getting into it -- well that's something we've always had to deal with eh? Regardless, there will be new fans for TOS generated from this movie -- not everybody is gonna get on the TOS bandwagon...but that's their loss.

TOS ran for 79-80 episodes (depending on how you count 'em). That's three totally bizarre and weird episodes. Sure. Compared to a two hour film riddle with plot holes. I'll take the Okay Corral every time. At least when those episodes are criticized, there's not an entire gang of people piling on to tell you how wrong you are, or how you're not a "real" Trek fan because you don't worship them.

Nah, TOS has always been my favorite. I loved ALL the TOS films and was "meh" toward all the TNG films (although I loved the TNG series). They should have hung up TNG with AGT, a perfect send-off.

I also loved DS9, but TOS remains my favorite. I LOVED the new film, BTW and I saw TOS first run!

which 10 tos episodes would you recommend to a friend who liked the new movie and wanted to see tos.

I agree, there are not too many defending those eps, but there are more then three clunkers (I didn't even say anything about parallel earths, gangster planet, space Nazis, Abe Lincoln, etc...not even Brain and Brain what is Brain? lol)

My point is that much of the praise heaped on TOS is praise for Star Trek as we choose to recall it, not as it actually was. We hold up "City on the Edge of Forever" and "The Menegerie" but pretend "Lights of Zetar" and "The Apple" never happened. I'm a TOSser first and foremost, but I have to be honest, there were clunkers a-plenty and talking about TOS like it was literary brilliance is simply not true and perhaps even a little dishonest.

I agree. What I at least love about TOS is the sheer energy and excitement they brought to even the most inane story. Well yes, even then there was an occasional dull episode, but altogether, I enjoyed watching these characters do their thing even when the plot is stupid. In no way, is e.g. The Gamesters of Triskelion high art. Or even good or original storytelling. Not at all. But it's both fun and funny. I always giggle with joy whenever Shatner does the Kirk-Fu, complete with the requisite TOS Fight Music.

I'm in heaven when Spock and McCoy exchange snarky remarks.

And the cheesy coda moments when - sometimes after going through a severe crisis that cost crewmembers their lives - everybody has a good hearty laugh on the bridge... I love that too.

These are some of the ingredients that make your favorite food your favorite food. Pizza, loved by many, is not at all high Italian cuisine, quite the contrary actually, but one can still say without having to be ashamed that one likes it better than any other food.

I love it that with the new film, they've gone back to the original recipe - which includes for me these things, this fun, this energy, this irreverence, these characters that made everything watchable. Watching the movie I felt the same exhilaration I feel every time I watch TOS. What more could you ask for? After so many years of dull Star Trek, I say not much.

Go to the TOS forum I think there are threads started with this question posed.

I like just about all the TOS's for one reason or another...for me the only real clunker was alt factor. People like you who need to point out what went wrong here in this epidose and what was cheesy here...I call them Star Trek "elitists"...I'm glad I'm not in that camp, the camp I'm in enjoys all 79...ok ok 78. "Clunkers a plenty" -- plenty is way too strong of a word...I'll accept "few"....and that is just your opinion, which many will agree with but it's still your opinion...not fact here.

does the film heighten your appreciation of TOS?

Yes, because now I realize what we lost, and what we were given in it's place.

Oh come on now...we didn't lose anything...we still have the original which will always be best...but you can't open your heart up to the re-boot just a little bit? Now granted if they fuck up the sequel I'm bailing...but stick with it until then.....will you? Great! Glad to hear it!
