Does Poking on FB really mean...

I poked a girl on facebook once. There was no dirty intentions behind why I did it, I just did it as a "Hey there buddy " She poked me back and I figured that was the end of it. Well apparently I found out the next day her boyfriend got super pissed that it happened and she didn't tell him about it.

That's an old IRC term too.

The creators have (to my knowledge) deliberately never said what Poking is meant for - it's just something they wanted to develop its own context and connotations. It means different things for different people.

Hmm... glad I've never poked anyone on FB. I rarely use FB though more and more of my online friends are moving towards FB and away from IMs like MSN. I almost poked a friend the other day just because, to me, it's the equivalent of a wave or a "Hey, I'm online" kind of thing.

Damn internet.
