Perhaps. I lump Oprah fans in the same category as Soap Opera fans, mostly because they're the only ones home during the day to watch them. Everybody else is at work.

I am not at work and I neither watch Oprah or soap operas (or any daytime TV).

I used to have a friend who worked and she taped the soaps and watched them when she got home.

A friend lived for a time in Sydney. His tales of outgoing Aussies and Vegemite made it sound like a very attractive place. One worth seeing and experiencing.

I could care less about Oprah.

Oprah does not interest me in the slightest, in fact I find her omniprescence in our media incredibly annoying, but I'd love to visit Austrailia for it's own merits. That place looks AWESOME.

We don't need Oprah for that, although she might highlight some good spots to visit or something?

Hardly. She went to Ayer's Rock, Sydney, Melbourne and (I think) Queensland. Typical tourist destinations. She has not discovered anything new.

If you or anyone else reading this thread does end up coming to Australia then take my advice - come for a decent slab of time - say a month or two, hire a van and go on a road trip right around the country.

If I were to come to America - oh how I yearn for the money to do that - that's the way I'd go about things.

I'm not particularly interested in visiting Australia, with or without Oprah.

However, someone on another board I read did post a photo of the giant illuminated red O hung on Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of Oprah's visit. The replies included the gems of:

Poster1: "Wow, Red Ring of Death"
Poster2: "Nah; Sauron"

:guffaw:

(and not even a sci-fi/fantasy sort of board)

Some of her American audience came to Tasmania. One of the women said she thought that Tasmania would be a tropical island with palm trees because she knew it was the most southern state and she though that the further south you went the more tropical places got.

:vulcan:

I wonder if this is an appropriate interjection

(you will notice that the subtitles, presumably placed to help people understand our queer Australian accents, are not spelled correctly)

I - Surak - will not visit any place endorsed by Oprah. She endorsed Obama and that did not turn out good either.....

It's been a big deal in the media, news headlines, 10 minutes on new bulletins etc, especially since Hugh Jackman sconed himself in his big entry. :)

I'd say, even if you don't watch her normally, watch this. It looks like she captured some spectacular bits of the country on days of really good weather. She's done more with this trip than the last 2 tourism advertising campaigns. It may have cost $5m to set up, but apparently they've got back $40m+ already, and that's before the shows even go to air in the US, just with people travelling to see her.

That said, it makes me think I might have to travel around Australia and do my own doco on the country, just for you guys! :D

The Australians are apparently paying her $5M to go there and film two shows. They're even temporarily renaming the Sydney Opera House as the Oprah House.

That is true, but in return already 8 times return. And as Australis as said, the shows are yet to air. Plus the word of mouth is yet to start, as those Americans who came here will tell others.

Plus this is better than the last idea, of Lara Bingle "Where the Bloody hell are ya?" from a few years ago.

(I'm not someone who watches Oprah, FYI)
