This scene was parodied brilliantly on "Family Guy" last Sunday.
 
Actors looking almost into the camera are not "close calls". There's a general rule in closeup that the more intimate the shot, the closer the camera is to the actor and the closer it is to their eyeline. This because you can read the expression better in such angles than others.
