Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel....

I agree that we should take ALL plot rumors so far with very large grains of salt. But I think the time travel element, while not being officially confirmed, seems fairly likely -- several sites have reported that their "sources" have unofficially confirmed at least that much. One of these is Trekmovie.com, which to date seems to be fairly well plugged-in:

TrekMovie.com has confirmed that elements of the original AICN rumor report are true (such as the inclusions of the Romulans and time-travel), however a source tells us that much of the original AICN story is still pure speculation.
Article here.

Of course, I could be completely and utterly wrong here. Which is fine too. As for me, I don't really mind one way or another, as long as the idea is executed well and entertainingly.
ALL of the "Time Travel" stories have based this upon certain information that HAS been released, indicating that the film takes place in multiple timeframes.

There's quite a bit of extrapolation from that, to "there's time travel in the movie." Well, yeah... the one-day-at-a-time sort, and the "according to the narrative" sort... but there's NO formally released information, from anyone involved in the film, that states, either in a roundabout way or in a direct way, that there will be time travel BY CHARACTERS IN THE FILM.

Yes, we... THE AUDIENCE... will be "time travelling" throughout the film. Whether we're following a character in his "real time" or whether it's flashbacks and so forth... NONE of that is known with any form of certainty.

That doesn't mean that the whole film won't be "Spock and Spock's Excellent Adventure" (calling for a cameo by George Carlin of course!). But we don't KNOW. And all this guessing... it's pointless.

OK, now if the movie takes place at different times, such as presenting different courses of action taking place, and then the scene changes to a different time period, then that is fine; however, Spock traveling back in time to help his younger self, to me, is L-A-M-E.

Cary I agree its pointless - but what would we do with ourselves if we didn't spend time piecing this puzzle together? Well likely not hanging out here since its our pastime ;)

There is a difference between time travel being used in a lame fashion and it being overused. (Which was your original claim) As others have pointed out, only 2 of the 10 films have used time travel and in the hundreds upon hundreds of TV episodes on a handful used time travel. So its lameness and not frequency that is your problem with time travel?

....again in a Trek movie?

I'm not saying that it won't be a good movie. In fact, I think it will be quite enjoyable and probably one of the best Trek movies. But, even if it does turn out pretty well, doesn't it make you mad that once again the writers can't resist using time travel?

Now, I'm sure the audience that this movie is trying to appeal to (people who aren't really Trek fans) won't care that time travel is once again being used if 1) they like the movie and 2) it's a big hit with the casual movie audience.

But for us Trekkers (you [my furry little friend], me, all of us here in this milking message board), won't WE be frustrated that this will have been the third Trek movie to have time travel in it (the fourth if you count 'Generations' as a time travel movie)? Will that make you mad in a way? If it turns out to be a good movie and we enjoy the living hell out of it, will it make you jump for joy at the greatness of the movie while at the same time make you shake your fist at the heavens while cursing to the gods that time travel was once again used in a Trek flick?

Its only the third Trek film with time travel. We had four Trek films with Klingons. Does that mean we shouldnt see Klingons in anymore Trek films. Of course not.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

^ I could do without Klingons.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

^What Klingons? We haven't had Klingons in a Trek film since ST3 (and maybe 6, except for General shk'spIr.)

Lursa & Bator.

Hey I like Chang... again shows a bit of variation among Trek species.

Speaking of this I love hearing complaints about "over used Romulans" given the Romulans weren't even barely in the movie that was supposed to be about them. Bring them on!!!

All 10 movies and every single episode featured time travel.

B'Etor, and they were whores. :alienblush:

General shk'spIr belonged in TFF, even though I rate TUC beneath.

I think it's a gut reaction against the "treatment" of the Romulans in ENT more than anything, to be honest.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

The Klingons in ST 3 didn't have much in common with TOS Klingons. Kor was a smart and very modern dude; Kruge and company were medieval morons.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

you know there are a lot of posts about people being 'angry' and 'pissed' about this or that element of the new star trek movie. Usually pissed off about snippets of rumors.

Angry over a movie without a trailer. A movie being made by Paramount's A-Team 5 years after the last one flopped. A movie with a mega budget and a high profile cast. A movie written and produced by die-hard trek nerds.

I am soooo angry about all that. how dare they.

Oh, I don't know about that. Kruge was pretty much the same "type" of adoring fellow that Scotty decked in Trouble with Tribbles. But yeah, Kor was easily more intelligent and sly.

ST3 didn't give us the best portrayal of Klingons, but it was the last movie before the Reign of The Retard Space-Vikings.

Hell, real Vikings at least bathed.

That fits the TNG Klingons for sure... can't say it jives with what I have taken from any of the ToS movies with Klingons. If anything Chang and co prove this since those Klingons were all rather refined and clearly bathed and I'll one further we were meant to look at them as upper class.

Yeah, because a remake made by alleged fans of Star Trek makes it sooooooooooo much more acceptable.

Would you rather it be Michael Bay, Tim Story or Renny Harlin?

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

Nobody. Just because Orci and his pals claim they are Trek fans does NOT make it easier to swallow.

Re: Does it piss anyone off that they had to use time travel

I can vouch for the people behind the movie...they are real fans. Especially Orci and Lindelof. And real 'Trekkie' level fans. They have seen every episode, read many books, have the toys, etc. This movie would not be being made if it werent for this team. Paramount would still have trek on the back burner if it were not for this team and their love of Trek.

Why are people so bent out of shape over time travel??

Oh yeah.. "It's overdone.." That old chestnut. There are only so many plot devices one can use in sci-fi and TT is one of them. I don't think Trek has over used it. Used it poorly, yes, but not overused. It's all about the story and how it is served.

The one thing about time travel that is overdone is the bitching and moaning about it. That I can certainly do without.

The other thing to consider is that Time Travel is only a rumour at this point. I am not going to worry about the plot of this film until or unless something official is actually announced. For now I will keep my knickers loose and fancy free.

I have more important things to worry about: rent, work, bills, world peace, relationships, responsabilities, deadlines, etc. Whether or not Star Trek uses time travel to tell their story or not is pretty low on the totem pole at this point. All I want is an entertaining, compelling story to get excited about.

In other words, there is no other way for the writers to come up with a decent story other than to resort to Time Travel. Sorry, but I'm not buying it. This should be called Doctor Who Trek at the rate they keep using time travel storylines.

Not interested.

Resort?

One could frame every single potential plot device in the negative light you have.

There is nothing inherently wrong with time travel, nor is it a cop out.

I can't take the word of someone who is on friendly terms with Orci. I need someone untainted.
