Does it make sense combining Chief Of Security with Tactical Officer?

Wow, I didn't like Firefly either, for me was "The Adventures of Han Solo" the TV series. I couldn't get pass the pilot, I was taken to see Serenity which I was too young and when I was older I saw it with friends and the material couldn't keep my interest. It something which is happening with all of Joss Whedon's material; they just don't hold up with time.

Season 1 TNG had it right. It had a security officer (Yar) and a tactical officer (Worf). When Yar died, Worf should have stayed the latter or become the former.
IIRC, Worf's season 1 job was supposed to be Officer of the Deck, basically the guy in charge of the bridge, making sure it runs smoothly.

Those are already seperate positions on my typical Senior Staff roster for a my Star Trek Head Canon and 650+ page
Star Trek New TV Series Universe
Writers Guide / Technical Rules Manual that I constantly update.

I personally would've spammed ALOT of torpedoes at them if I was in that situation, if they're bypassing my shield, launch the full barrage and keep on firing back, non-stop. Don't stop with the Phaser fires, everything you've got.
The one thing that I cannot stand in Star Trek battles is the lack of countermeasures, electronic or otherwise. Launching torpedoes. launching probes to create artificial "noise" and such should be standard rather than panic driven.

This is why I appreciate the practicality of Malcom Reynolds:

@ 4:30, Zoe was going to let Malcolm "Handle the situation himself, because it was something he needed to do".
Malcom <while getting choked over a chasm> says: "No, no I don't".
And the rest of the team realizes that and plugs the bastard.
=D
I did appreciate that battle and how it played with the trope of hero has to get the last shot. Firefly is an interesting experience, as each episode is a little bit different and not always enjoyable. I liked Serenity at first but my interest has waned.

Off topic but there we go.

It's my personal Writer's guide / Technical manual that is 650+ pages and going on my Head Canon / Star Trek Universe.
All the changes that needs to be made up to the World Building for my 26th century.

I've accounted for everything in Star Trek from TOS up to DISCO, Picard, Lower Decks, etc.

I've also had fixes for things I don't like or agree with, which I'll change.

It's an entire World that I have and my Head Canon is setup for.

Obviously I'm handling the technical side of things, the story side I'll leave to the writers while I do all the world building and handle all the Trekno-babble and how the technical things work.

Everybody has things they like or don't like. I'm perfectly fine with Joss Whedon's TV works.

Have you tried Babylon 5?

That's fine, everybody has things they'll enjoy and not enjoy.

That's what diversity of opinion is all about.

Fascinating.

Fascinating.
I've been modifying the guide for over a decade, so I've thought about the majority of subjects related to the World Building in Star Trek.

From every little thing like Uniforms, Ranks, Pips to standardized StarFleet deck sizes & crawl space / jeffries tube sizes & location.

That explains a lot. Sounds like a dedicated project that I am both intrigued by and yet cannot dedicate the time to like you did. So hat's off to you.

Fair point. Personally, @KamenRiderBlade's writer's guide sounds incredibly interesting. I wish I had the time to dedicate to such research :)
It's not like I wrote it in one day or anything, it's off & on again when I get ideas & inspiration, do research into topics, make adjustments.

e.g.
The existence of the Spore Drive really changed ALOT of things for me, but I integrated it into my universe and put in believable limitations so that it isn't "All Powerful" and that other TransWarp capable FTL drives will have reasons to be used.

So all the FTL Drives will have purpose and meaning:
That means all 16 different methods of FTL in Star Trek.

That includes one of my own original design =D

I would be curious, however, what the original reasoning of the writers was: "Well, the Chief of Security every now and then shoots things, the tactical officer every now and then shoots things, it's practically the same job!!! We are military GENIUSES! Why the heck don't they do the same on real warships?!!"

It's putting it all down on to paper in some fashion that impresses me. Like I have researched a lot on Star Wars and Star Trek, among other topics, but integrating it all together is something I have not done. So, yes, it is very impressive.

Honestly, I think it is more a matter of casting and limiting the number of people. Like, Data pretty much is the science officer but he is the operations officer. It's strange.

Data is one character whom I could see wearing any of the three uniform colors. He's regularly in command, or at least second (red), he's the operations officer (gold), and he's very much akin to a science officer (blue).

It was a case of "having your cake and eating too." They said that a lot of things now were completely managed by computers (for example communications) but still they needed an excuse for having the whole cast on the bridge. So we got a bridge that was more crowded than TOS, while they kept telling us that it didn't take that many people anymore to manage a spaceship.

I guess having a hero team consisting of generalists would have been perfectly doable, too.

Or, say, this could have been ST:Stargate, with the heroes listed by their landing party competence rather than pseudo-USN shipboard jobs. A contacts specialist is still missing from the Trek mix - but starting with TNG, we could have had four or five flavors of contacts specialist (interpreter, cultural interaction know-it-all, bludgeoner-of-natives, political advisor, spy) and dropped any references to a Chief Engineer or Communications Officer or Helmsman's Mate 3rd Rate.

Why couldn't Riker retain the rank Captain ? Having the rank Captain and being Captain of a vessel are different things.

Afterall I'm fairly sure in TUC there were 3 Captains onboard, Kirk who was also Captain of the Enterprise, plus Spock and Scotty

Because it would have been clunky to have them constantly refer to "Captain Riker" and "Captain Picard" there would have been no reason for him to have that rank

Remember that both Worf and Geordi wore Command red in the early days - it's possible Picard saw some aptitude for command in both and was rotating them through various assignments to get a broad range of experience to assist with future promotion plans.

Isn't that what most "Lower Deckers" are until they figure out which department they want to specialize in?

Yes, you are right of course. I was just saying that, contrary to @Oddish claim, Worf was not the "Tactical Officer" in Season 1. At least nor before Yar met the Tar.

Remember that when Worf becomes DS9's tactical officer, he reverts to red.

Aaaaand that's the second time you give him that rank when he did not have it on the show. On DS9 he was Strategic Operations Officer:
https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Strategic_operations_officer
His duties included "coordination of all Starfleet activity in the sector" which is definitely a command branch, I'd say.

So no he did not "revert to red when he became DS9's tactical officer", he changed to red when he became DS9's Strategic Operations Officer

As to Chief Tactical Officer, here's a list of people who held it:
https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Chief_tactical_officer

And Tasha held that rank, and Worf got that rank after she died.

They made repeatedly clear that the Enterprise can be manned by just one persone. But the bridge was always full of people doing things.

And might that be because it's a TV show and having many people on the bridge is more interesting? ;) Let alone that it gives the actors screen-time.

Plus, honestly, I always thought the Enterprise D bridge is rather minimalistic. Most of the time there were just 9 people on it; the pilot, Data, Riker, Picard, Troi (who was, of course playing Tetris on that little console next to her chair) Worf and three extras who manned the three stations at the back.

From what I've read there was a bit of a disagreement behind the scenes about the bridge in Season 1 (I know, shock, behind-the scenes drama in TNGs first season) apparently Roddenberry wanted just the ops and pilot stations on the bridge, while others wanted more stations. The automation angle gave them the freedom to have as many or as few people on the bridge as they needed for a scene.

I understand it's frustrating if you want to look at it from a strictly in-universe perspective.
But...the extreme end of the automation might be like on Andormeda, where the ship could run on a skeleton crew, but it was only supposed to be for emergencies and havign a full human (well.."human") crew was still seen as better better.

Well, for the Generations movie they even added more stations because otherwise on the big screen it would be look "wrong" :o
