Does it hurt to be transported?

Laura Cynthia Chambers

I don't mean when it malfunctions. I mean, do characters experience tingling/burning/dizziness/disorientation even when they're otherwise materially intact?

The definition of what happens during transportation sounds like it would hurt but people's reactions coming out suggest not.

We even spend time with Barclay in his matter stream in the buffer a couple times and he isn't in pain, except from what he thinks he is seeing in there.

Barclay would have never used the transporter if it did.

oh and it depends on the plot

Barclay wouldn't have endured those long transports when was trying to figure out the langoliers in the stream

Just seeing the thread title made me think of the scene in STIV:TVH, when Gillian let out a howl, the first time she was beamed aboard the "HMS Bounty." Not a howl of pain, just a howl of "What the Hell is happening to me?"

So there might be some emotional trauma, leftover psychological angst about the integrity of one's body (whether one might spontaneously disintegrate without the transporter machine) nightmares, etc.

Somehow, the 'skeletal lock' that B'elanna came up with always sounded a bit painful to me :)

Not sure how it could hurt - your entire body is dematerialised at the same time, including your nervous system. Phantom pain? That said, I also don't understand how Barclay experiences the things he experiences in Realm of Fear.

They don't hurt until later.

Or long before you use them. Messing with time can reverse cause and effect, after all.

I always wondered why TNG beams the heart region last, and why VOY has big blobs moving along an axis first (initially just top-down, later the longest axis)
