Does it get better?

I’ve been rewatching TNG from “The Naked Now” on, and I’m realizing that a lot of what I imagine the Federation to be like comes from watching these early seasons as a child. There’s a sensibility and a hinting at what Earth is like. The designs of the uniforms and civilian clothes, the bridge and crew quarters (and the decorations within)...and there are paradisiacal planets like Haven and the Edo’s and the little bit of Paris we saw in “We’ll Always Have Paris.”

As much as I like the zoom-in shot of Paris on DSC — we got to see orbital defense satellites(!) and Parisians with old-fashioned umbrellas in the evening rain — it looked more steampunk that Star Trek to me.

There are plenty of watchable episodes in seasons 1 and 2.

Season 1 is the most like TOS...
No, it's DEFINITELY NOT - and if you believe so, you really need to watch and pay attention to TOS. What TNG S! is most like is the second and third seasons of Irwin Allen's "Lost In Space" (Hell, with the opening of "Haven", I was half expecting a "Dr. Smith" type character to appear.)

TOS Season 1 is probably the best overall season of the Star Trek franchise ever filmed and has more in common with classic storytelling elements of the original Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. Yes, I does have a few misfires, but its leaps and bounds over the overall disaster that was TNG Season 1.

TNG Season 1 is in no way like TOS Season 1 as TOS season 1 was excellent, and VERY watchable and rewatchable.

I said it's the most like TOS as compared to the rest of TNG and subsequent spinoffs. Season 1 is more about the adventure of the week than season 2, when TNG got Ten Forward and became more character oriented, and when the stories became smaller in scope. I wasn't equating TOS season 1 with TNG season 1. I would argue that the first season of TNG feels more like TOS as a whole than seasons 2-7.
