Does it get better?

StarLord

I’m only on season 1 of TNG it is really slow paced to me I was wondering if it gets better, is there a story arch or can I skip to the faster paced more action seasons without getting lost?

1) Go to season three. TNG only starts getting good at that point.
2) There are no real "arcs" in TNG--it's episodic almost all the way through. This ain't DSC, with its fancy-shamancy serialization.

Because of the episodic format yes you can skip ahead, but you will miss out on some good material by doing so. The character development in the early episodes is great, but at the same time admittedly the show doesn't get it's balance until later.

You can skip ahead but there are a few important episodes I would recommend like the pilot, Datalore, Where No One Has Gone Before and Skin of Evil.

Skip to "The Big Goodbye" and then watch "Heart of Glory", the original and best holodeck and Klingon episodes. TNG did many more holodeck and Klingon shows. Then give season 2 a chance, you may like it more. I've found that every TNG season has 4-6 episodes that are worth skipping, the rest is gold.

It does get better!! Season 3 and up are when things really get rolling. Season 1 and a bit awkward (IMO), but there are some good episodes.

Skip to season 3 if you want. Season Two is a lot better than season 1, but it might be better to go back and watch those as a fan with a higher tolerance for slow pacing, if you end up liking the show.

Honestly, you don't even really need to watch any of the first two seasons to understand the show, because all the characters and tone sort of change by the time season three starts. You only really need to know a few things, that I can think of:

-Something happens to Tasha Yar (Skin of Evil is the episode, if you haven't already seen it)
-The Enterprise will encounter the Borg race (Q Who is the episode)
-Worf has a former lover named K'Ehleyr, who will return in season four (The Emissary is the episode, and it's worth watching)

Each season of TNG is gentle progression from the previous season. Season 2 is still strictly adventure of the week but it's much more character oriented than season 1. Season 3 looks much slicker than season 2 but there is a good continuety with the characters from the previous year, and it's less about exploring weirdness in space. Season 4 picks up on that and does shows like "Family" which is more Masterpiece Theater than TOS.

Just stick with it IMHO. To be honest, every season had it's ups & downs, & you are certain to find stuff you like at any given point, because of how episodic the show is. It would be a shame for you to miss something that you might enjoy, just because you're looking for a point of quality consistency.

Honestly, we can barely find 2 of us here that agree on the value of any given episode. What you like might be entirely different than the responses here. That's just the kind of show this is. Its beauty is fully in the eye of each individual beholder

Can I skip to the faster paced more action seasons without getting lost?

I'd debate that it even had faster paced, more action seasons. Star Trek: The Next Generation certainly got better, but it was always like a tone poem. It had occasional action packed episodes, but was mainly long diatribes about the meaning of existence etc.

In fact, the second half of season one, and parts of season two, are about as action packed as TNG ever gets until the theatrical movies :D

Thanks for the input. I already watched sto voyager and enterprise. Thinking of skipping tng and going right into ds9

I was thinking the same thing. Most of the whiz bang action came out in those early seasons
