Does anyone remember U.F.O. by Gerry Anderson in 1969?

One of my favorites since I first saw(as a 8 y.o. boy) the UFO series debut in the U.S. in 1972-73. The new movie is set to be released in 2013 according to their official site.

I remember it too. I was 10 years old when I fist saw it in 1973, I didn't know it originally air in 1969 at the time. As a kid, I really liked S.I.D. (Space Intruder Detector satellite).

I loved this show, and I'm really hoping that the movie comes together and gets made. As far as I know, Josh Jackson is still connected to the project for the role of Colonel Paul Foster.

It seems to be in some kind of production limbo, but hopefully that will change.

Is the new film live-action or CGI?

Also, is there any truth to the rumor that in the original series...

the aliens had no physical form at all, but were using captured humans as unwilling hosts, kind of like Goa'uld?

I seem to remember the Alien's breathing water, as when caught they would try and breathe oxygen to kill themselves?

no they breathed liquid and it was theorised that was help them during space travel.

if the aliens were young enough they could be reverted back to air breathing c.f episode 2 - The Computer Affair

. . . My only disappointment is Wanda Ventham, who plays Colonel Veronica Lake, is only in a handful of episodes . . .
Colonel Virginia Lake.

This is Veronica Lake.

I liked Wanda Ventham too — a very capable actress and an elegant beauty, sort of a cross between Honor Blackman and Julie Christie.

I remember wathcing UFO during one it's re-runs, where S.H.A.D.O. HQ was disguised as a film studio.

It was also disguised as a film studio in the first run of the series. Not just in the re-run! :vulcan:

It was?!

Seriously, I hope they continue that idea in the movie (if said film gets made). The idea of a working movie studio over the HQ was a perfect cover, as it allowed for all manner of unusual things to be brought in; no one would question a futuristic piece of equipment because they would just presume it was being used as a set/prop in a film.

Of course, it was also a cost-cutting measure, since some of action (the episode “Timelash” comes to mind) could take place in, of all things, a movie studio!

Yes, I remember UFO. According to the wiki, although it was copyrighted in 1969, it first aired in 1970. I was just a kid when I saw it here in the US in the early 70's. I don't remember the exact years, but if it was in syndication, it was not many years after it first aired.

Having seen many of the episodes more recently, unfortunately the show does largely suffer from nostalgia-exceeds-reality syndrome.

But what nostalgia! I was so excited when dad brought me back a Dinky Toys Interceptor from England.

Like so many films these days, due to many earlier disappointments, I look forward to the UFO film and I hope for the best, but I expect it will suck. For example, Thunderbirds really, really, really, really sucked, really beyond words.

If the UFO film is done right, it could be awesome, and a new generation of kids will want their parents to buy them interceptor toys.

What I'd like is for the film to sell us the idea, that the Earth is secretly under attack by aliens who want to steal our bodies, as something really plausible. SID and the moonbase must be believable. I think it could be done even if set in present day: e.g. the civilian space program is languishing because SHADOW is getting all the funding; the cost of the War on Terror is inflated to cover SHADOW's budget, and even after all this SHADOW is still barely holding the line, etc. If taken seriously and handled realistically, I think it could be genuinely scary and feed into our post X-Files and conspiracy theory paranoias, at least for part of the time while it is not wowing us with action and SFX.

But alas, I expect them to totally blow it, and make a box-office bomb that people just snicker at. I hope I'm wrong.

Of course, I'm probably the wrong person to offer suggestions for things that people won't snicker at, because I think the purple wigs are sexy as hell. :p

I need to get off my butt and revive this project, but here's my UFO review thread form a while back...

I think that 'Timelash' was my favorite episode of the whole series. Cool concept (though not exactly original), but I really enjoyed seeing Straker put in the hot seat and becoming a real man of action in that one.

That, and the afore-mentioned Col. Lake looked really, really good in that one!

OK, according to the official movie website, Avi Haas and Matthew Gratzner are claiming that the project is still in fact, under development and they are now aiming for summer of 2013. Which, if the rumors of Josh Jackson's involvement are true, then the shooting schedule would most likely be after Fringe finishes it's final season early next year.

On the subject of casting: While Jackson's name has long been associated with this project as potentially being Paul Foster, and we have at least two votes for Neal McDonough to portray Straker (Mr. Laser Beam and myself), I've been thinking about who I would like to see in some of the other roles.

I know that Ali Larter was being considered to play Colonel Virginia Lake, but if my wish were to come true, I'd much rather see Allison Mack in the role; by the time shooting starts, Allison would only be five years younger than Wanda Ventham was when she had the role.

I'd love to see Jude Law as Colonel Freeman and Ed Harris as General Henderson. And for the lovely Lt. Ellis: Emma Watson, with or without purple hair!

Just wishful thinking on this fan's part, but I'd love to see some other posters chime in with their ideal picks.

Agree, "Timelash" was both eerie and engaging at exploring the S.H.A.D.O. HQ with Straker and Col. Lake dealing with this UFO assault. :techman:

Our local library has the entire series on DVD and I just checked out Disk 8, which contains 'Timelash'. It's always fun to see just how well you remember something, and how much your memory has embellished it.

Joshua Jackson? Too young to play a full Colonel, methinks...

I thought it was so the acceleration didn't crush their lungs (or the lungs of their host bodies). 'Breathing' a super-oxygenated liquid would be the answer to that.

I remember the silver costumes and the purple hair, and that's about it. Oh, and there was a really wacky looking car, right?

I suspect I'm remembering the best bits.

The best bit -- Dolores Mantez (not Gabrielle Drake) in a purple wig. :techman:
