Does anyone like TMP uniforms?

I always thought the biosensor transmitted data on the wearer's life-signs to the ship's computer. If something was wrong, it would immediately alert sickbay that person was in need of medical attention.

That was the description of its function in the novelization. It did seem a little too large and clunky, especially compared to McCoy's little handheld scanner from the series.

The outer casing was probably decorative and protective, with the interior mechanics being no larger than McCoy's scanner.

Even so, it's still a glorified belt buckle. It should have at least been a little flatter, if not narrower and shorter.

It was intentionally designed to visually break up the otherwise one-color tunics and jumpsuits. As far as it being too big, that's debatable, but the uniforms as a whole can now be looked at as dated and maybe even short-lived, IMO.

The idea of the bio-belt sensor was very sensible and carried forward to TNG where it merged with the communicator. I agree that the design should have been a bit sleeker though.

I like to think that it is the bio-belt signal that allows people to be transported as it functions as a localised quantum scanner with enough energy for a few uses. I never understood the disconnect between using transporter pads sometimes and then others just beaming everyone situated in an area from orbit.

I don't mind the idea of the biosensor, but it's design and placement just doesn't work for me. Maybe it breaks up the uniform too much, I don't know.

Though, of interest, there has been some development in fabrics that can detect changes in the human body. Could be an interesting addition to a new uniform concept.

Curious.

I've just recently finished watching the old series SEARCH from 1972. For those unfamiliar with this old show it centered on the exploits of three rotating agents (known as Probes) who worked for an agency known as World Securities.

Probe field agents each had an audio implant that allowed them to remain in constant contact with Probe Control. They also had a dental implant that allowed them to signal "yes" or "no" responses to Probe Control whenever it wasn't possible for the agents to communicate by voice (such as when other people were present).

The agents also had a miniaturized scanner about the circumferance of an AA size battery and no more than a quarter inch thick that attached either to a ring, a tie pin or decorative neck chain. This scanner allowed Probe Control to track the agent globally as well as monitor his/her vital signs. Probe Control could use the scanner to aid the agent through all manner of wavelengths (and to some extent by necessity of the plot). They were generally consistent with its use and limitations. The scanner could also read bio signs of the agent and of others in the agent's vicinity.

My essential point, though, is that as far-fetched as the tech seamed in 1972 it really seems quite plausible today. And it always struck me as more advanced than what was seen in TMP and later Treks. The audio implant would make perfect sense for a far future concept like Star Trek and the wearable miniaturized scanner makes the tricorder look awfully clunky and cumbersome given the SEARCH scanner and implant leave one's hands free. A communicator implant would also eliminate the old gimmick of losing one's communicator thus losing contact with the ship.

In some respects SEARCH was a spin on the old The Man From U.N.C.L.E. idea, but the tech depicted struck me as a smart evolution of what was seen on TOS.

I really like those TMP uniforms and color schemes, they have a more serious-futuristic tone. My only grip are some uniforms that appears early in the movie, such as these:

Fortunately, these were improved for later shots and were less 'revealing' LOL. For obvious reason I really hate these :angryrazz:...however, women may like it

Ah yes, the "Decker unit." :ack:

That is my least favorite of the TMP uniforms, as well.

I think the uniforms are pretty good. I can't quite figure out the color scheme (is it white for enlisted, brown for yeomen, beige for junior officers and blue for senior officers?), and the one-piece jumpsuits are remarkably unflattering. The big pockets, the odd cuffs, the epaulets, what I will euphemistically refer to as "the tailoring." The other variants are all better-looking (and I like the variety in uniform types, something that's come back in the JJ-verse) and logical, something that hasn't always been the case with the other uniform designs (look at Generations and DS9 showing that the Captain's vest for the TWOK and FC uniforms were worn under the regular jackets, complete with a second badge).

I like the idea that the badge just phases through, like ensign ros did in the titular episode. (she wraps her jacket around a refugee in some nice editing we never see her move the badge.)
But was Kirk's on his jacket and weskit in generations? Blame the Nexus or wearing mister scotts hand-me-downs.

Hollywood considerations are pretty much without saying, because it generally follows the idea of "who looks better in what color," but from an "in-universe" aspect, it really isn't that difficult to sort things out, especially if we go with the idea of cross-trained personnel and related disciplines. The TWOK uniforms even took it a step further by having some personnel wear two colors (Saavik in Star Trek III wore a white undershirt and shoulder tab, but her left sleeve service bar had a wide section that was the same grayish-purple (sciences?) color that Chekov and Uhura wore.

A few other personnel at Starfleet HQ in Star Trek IV also sported more than one department color on their uniforms).

I remember reading Bob Fletcher's voluminous notes on the TWOK uniforms. Basically those slashes indicate a department head. Saavik is chief science officer, so she wears the white of command to denote she's a department head, and the grey slash to indicate it's the science department.

But confusingly, department heads could choose to have it the other way around - predominantly with the department colour, and the white slash to indicate seniority. You see this most often in the Starfleet Command personnel in TVH, and perhaps it's the only time, so you could argue instead it's some kind of ground administrator marker. Perhaps they aren't rated for space duty?

Similarly the cadet uniforms had the red for cadet, and a slash for their department - so again Saavik has the white as she's being groomed for command and taking the Kobayashi Maru.

When you line them all up they don't look too bad with TMP colours on their collars. I really wish they'd made a set of TMP figures though!

We got these two at least and I think I also saw an all grey Kirk variant somewhere. Not sure if he was real or just a custom. But yeah, a whole team including the space suit would have been nice. I also would like to have Scotty in white with black vest like the smaller Playmates figures have. I guess it’s customizing time (I take it @Pauln6 the figures in your picture that I don’t own are your customizations? Nice!)

There were figures at the time. I lost my Spock though. They were on a par with similar figures of the day (star wars, black hole)
There was even a plush Spock toy, my wife has it and the little one adopted it.

Yeah I bought some spare ones and posted on DST's forums. For a while I really thought they were going to do some more 2-packs with some more of the crew (simple head swaps and colour changes mostly) but when that did not materialise and when they cancelled the TOS Chapel and Rand figures, I went to town on the TWok ones instead.

There's never been a full run of TMP figures has there? Playmates did all but Decker and Scotty, so they at least came close.
