Does anyone know what Sulu was about to say...

srombomb

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
In the Wrath of Khan, in the shuttle ride over to the Enterprise, Sulu begins to say something to the effect of " I'm delighted any chance to go aboard the Enterprise.." and bam rough cut. I was 8 and I thought it was just a horrible edit of whatever it was he was about to continue to say..

Could that have been where the Excelsior was mentioned? Just dumb editing in general.

Also, if the Shat somehow gets a crack at fixing Trek 5 and restoring the real ending, and fixing other bad effects shots, we then have what I deem to be 6 solid original series Star Trek movies, plus the new film.

Here's how the scene originally went. I've bolded the dialogue that was actually used.
INT. SPACE SHUTTLE 29

A new composite. Bones, Sulu, Uhura and Kirk -- who
sits, reading. Through the windows we can see the
approach to the starship ENTERPRISE. Kirk looks up,
nods. Sulu activates a comm button.

SULU
Enterprise, this is Admiral Kirk's
party on final approach.

ENTERPRISE VOICE
(filtered)
Enterprise welcomes you. Prepare
for docking.

Kirk looks up from his book as Sulu sits next to him.

KIRK
I really must thank you.

SULU
(embarrassed)
I am delighted; any chance to go
aboard Enterprise,
however briefly,
is always an excuse for nostalgia.

KIRK
I cut your new orders personally. By
the end of the month, you'll have your
first command: USS EXCELSIOR.

SULU
Thank you, sir. I've looked
forward to this for a long time.

KIRK
You've earned it. But I'm still
grateful to have you at the helm
for three weeks. I don't believe
these kids can steer.

Sulu laughs.

Wow. I would have honestly loved to have had that dialogue in the movie.

And considering they were on the run for two more movies it would have been fine to both include it and have Sulu as part of the gang in the rest of the trilogy.

I wonder though, you know Scotty thought the Excelsior was a POS, (Bucket of bolts I believe the line was) and Sulu drooled over the thing, you think they ever got into any heated scotch (for Scotty) induced arguments over her?

Like after ST:III was over and the boys (and girl) came home and were let off the hook (by the time ST:VI rolled around) and Sulu called up Scotty and said something to the effect of "Hey Scotty I just wanted to let you know, I just took command of the Excelsior, and since you sabotaged her back in ST:III, she runs like crap now?"

Just a thought....:shifty:

I wonder whose knee jerked first?

Allegedly Shatner was upset about the prospect of a) George being another captain besides him and/or b) that it would ruin the dynamic to have George separated from the rest of the cast.

I think it's far more likely either Paramount or even Takei (yes, a stretch). Paramount probably more for Shatner's supposed latter reason. Takei because he might have then worried (and probably rightly so) that Sulu was about to be written out of the Trek universe by 'booting him upstairs' to another ship.

Could have for sure seen either happening..

The way Shat and Takei have argued over this for years makes it clear it was Shatner who did it. Takei constant wails he lost his big scene, and Shat wails back that Sulu wouldn't have been on the crew anymore so STFU. I think the end result worked out best for Takei. He got to be a fairly awesome captain for an entire movie.

You have to be listening for it. I only noticed it because I was listening to the movie while I was typing and it jarred me for a second.
