Does anyone know the name of this show?

I used to watch this multi-episode show years and years ago, must be around 10 years ago now, but I can't for the life of me remember what the show was.

Basically, as far as I remember. A meteor landed on earth that left a tiny little blob of what looked like Mercury, and it keeps expanding and expanding, the army try and take it out but fail and it grows even bigger, and the last thing I remember, I THINK that the big mercury blob killed everyone and absorbed the entire earth?

Doesn't anyone remember watching this show? I'm sure it probably wasn't shown outside the UK, but I'd really like to watch it again.

At first I thought it might be Invasion:Earth, but that doesn't sound quite right.

Hopefully someone has some ideas because it really is ringing a bell and now it'll bug me

I don't know of a TV show, but that sounds exactly like a book I read called "Moonseed", which is about ten or twelve years old:
