Does anyone have suggestions for names of starships

bluepicard27

im going to write my own trek series and and have not come up with a definate name so far i have three possible names :reliance, justice and example :bolian:

Re: does anyone suggestions for names of starships

What class is the ship?

Might be better to choose knowing if she's an explorer, escort, cruiser, surveyor, etc.

I'm moving this to Fan Fiction.

Reliance is a decent name, but I'd suggest Justicar or Exemplar instead of Justice and Example. Like Bry said though, it depends a lot on the type/class of ship.

I second this. You're not going to want to name a science or research vessel, after some mythological god of war, and you'll likely not want to name a warship after an explorer or famous scientist.

So the ships name shouldn't be arbitrary and picked at random. If it's a canon ship class, then look at the names that already exist and try to pick something that follows the naming convention already is place.
If the ship is of a class that is non-cannon and one that you've created yourself, then you can set your own naming convention...naming ships after moons in a certain solar system or rivers/lakes on Earth.

If someone else created the ship, ask them if they had some sort of naming convention in place. They may be able to provide you with a list on names to choose from.

And thirdly, you may want to consider what role the name will play in relation to the series itself. If your series is focused on the exploits of a doctor or some group of scientists, then you should pick something that conveys that, as it may end up being used as a title in some way.

For example, if creating a medical focused series, you could go with Hippocrates (as in the Hippocratic Oath) and call the series Star Trek: Hippocrates.

So if you picked the name Reliance, then it would be easy to just name the series, Star Trek: Reliance.

I like the use of "virtue" names because they can be rallied behind by many species.

Which raises another point: I think TPTB messed up by hardly ever showing a ship with an alien name.

I was just thinking, "what about an alien name" :)

The U.S.S. Shran for an Akira-Class heavy cruiser, or how about the U.S.S. V'Lar for a Norway-Class diplomatic courier?

The possibilities are endless.

For an Aerie-Class ship (see S.S. Raven) I once thought of the name U.S.S. Chok'obo, deciding that a chok'obo was a large flightless bird used by the natives of Alpha Centauri the same way humans used horses on Earth.

Where was it said that the Raven was an Aerie class?

I've seen several non-canon sources have named it the Aerie-Class, so adopted that into the universe in my mind.

If I recall, it was from a game, wasn't it? Where it was used as a colony ship?

I doubt that the Raven (a science vessel) is well suited to establish and/or supply colonies!

Perhaps based on the same spaceframe, but I think any differences would be enough to justify calling teh science vessel variant a different class name to the colony vessel variant.

(Of course, I have an agenda here - in my fanfic "The Hansen Diaries" I've named the Raven an Armstrong class vessel! :P)

Ok, until you said that I never realsied that the colony ship in Armada 2 looks like the Raven. That being said I doubt they're the same, the designers probably just used the look of it, the Raven was only a small ship.

Here's a picture of the Aerie class:

Look at all those windows! Definitely much bigger than then 4 deck USS Raven.
