Does Anybody know Why the network can'x American Bandstand??

Does anybody know why the ABC network can'x American Bandstand in the 1980's?

"can'x"

?!?

If you're asking why it was canceled I'd guess it was canceled for the same reason any other show is canceled, either the show's ratings dropped to the point it was no longer profitable to continue making it or the shows producers/creators no longer wanted to make it and didn't renew.

That and it was a victim of bands having MTV to promote music at the time.

The show was on the network for many years and was LOVED by ALL, just never really knew why the network removed the show from it's line-up.

I wouldn't say it was loved by all. Teenagers don't tend to identify with things from their parent's generation, and Dick Clark and AB were regarded by much of the show's target audience as irrelevant by the time the network dropped it. I was 16 at the time and no one I knew cared; I didn't even know it had gone into syndication till I read it last week when Clark died. As noted, if you wanted to see current bands there was MTV. People had also become more sophisticated about live music thanks to shows like Saturday Night Live and The Midnight Special; seeing bands lip synching to a fade-out on a record and playing instruments that weren't plugged in kind of seemed like a joke.

God bless them, they did try, though. Seeing bands like X and Public Image Ltd. on AB was pretty entertaining, though not for the reasons intended.

I predict the network will bring it back, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, seeing as he's most likely to take over the countdown as he's co-hosted with Dick Clark in the past. Although it was a product of a different generation, it could actually be more important than ever to the studios to help make albums relevant again, although this time, I think it should shift to showcasing indie artists.

Not to defame Dick Clark's memory or anything, but when I was a young kid and watching Saturday Morning cartoons, I knew it was time to go outside and play when American Bandstand came on.

Ha! I was thinking the *exact* same thing!

The show was cancelled by ABC because Dick Clark refused to let the network cut the show to 30 minutes. Instead, it moved to first-run syndication in 1987. Clark retired as host in April 1989, the show moved to the USA cable network, some guy named David Hirsch was hired as host (he's best known for hosting Beach Clash) and the show was dead by October.

(Edit: man I'm good - that was mostly from memory but I just did a Google and my facts were almost 100% correct - I just added in the months; I thought AB survived another year or even 2 after Clark left, but it was cancelled within a few months).

Wikipedia makes an unsourced claim that So You Think You Can Dance is based upon an unfulfilled plan to revive AB in the mid-2000s, making it technically a spin-off.

That, or if one was watching CBS, when the "pre-game" show started. I forgot what usually signaled the conclusion of the Saturday morning cartoon line-up on NBC.

Kids today stare on bewilderment and ask, "What? You only had cartoons on Saturday mornings...and they were on those 'old' networks?"

Sincerely,

Bill

Interesting. I have a hard time seeing it as a spin-off as it seems completely different than what AB was, not to mention the different format.

If they do ever bring AB back, they'd have to be real performances. Lipsynching was more of a technical limitation dating back to the early beginnings of the show to get good sound out of a performance. Many TV performances from the era did it, so it's not strictly a thing AB did, but there's no reason to use it these days unless you can't really sing.
