Doctors To Operate on Boy With Swollen Head.

An unknown stranger later visited their house . . .
As opposed to a familiar stranger?
I assume it means the author of the article does not know the identity of the stranger who donated money for the operation.

a bit obvious perhaps?

"Unknown stranger" is similar to advertisers offering "a free gift". Sorry, but I've never been the recipient of a gift I paid for.

Or "New and Improved". So it's new, but somehow you've improved upon the newness of it by... making it more new? Better new?

^ Well it could be new and crappier. Maybe a budget version of the original product with a few features cut for poorer people to be able to afford.

That's the issue, though. It can't be new and anything related to improvement on a product.

It can be new.
It can be improved.
It cannot be new and improved.

If it is new, then it is different from the product that you used before.
If it is improved, then it is not a new product, it is merely the one you had before, albeit with improvements.

For example, shampoo.

"Bob's Beard Shampoo! Try our new and improved formula!"

If it is a new formula, then it is not the same beard shampoo you have used before.
If it is an improved formula, then it is your same beard shampoo, just with an improvement on the formula.

So what the advertiser is doing is telling you it's new and improved. They want you to think it's like a new product, while actually selling you the same product, just with "improvements". It's a marketing fallacy.

Suppose it's something like a TV dinner with multiple components. The dessert could be new, while the chicken is merely improved.

Oh, great, now I have those utterly vile Swanson's TV dinners from the 70s in my mind. My mom would force these upon us when my dad was away on business, which was often. The mystery meat, the over-salted mashed "potatoes", the rubbery desserts...blech! :ack:

Thanks a lot! ;)

But I loved those, especially the greasy Fried Chicken and the Brownies for dessert. Modern microwavable dinners in plastic trays just can't compare to the old-style ones in the aluminum trays. Mmm. Now I'm nostalgic.
