Doctor Who Series Five Soundtrack or Lack of One

Yep...I'm gonna bring it up again because we're finished the series at least in the UK and close to finishing in North America and still no announcement from the BBC. It's also July 14th which was rumored to be a possible date for pre-orders on HMV according to Galifrey Base. It's never been explained what the hinge was back in Feb that Murray Gold reported on his twitter account which prevented the release of the specials soundtrack. Many fans here speculated that it was the rebranding that might have been the problem. I'm starting to get worried that we won't get any soundtrack this year...we're half way through it now.

I think they should just release the music in volumes. I think a good album cover would be that one of Tennant/Smith, tired of having to listen to shit on YouTube for the specials.

Yeah youtube is great but not for listening to music...I thought at first a double disc would be prudent but after thinking about it and the BBC distinguishing the two era's with the re-branding it would make more sense for two albums. The Specials first and then Series Five. We're still half way through the year but normally we've gotten at least an announcement with usually a release date of November for the UK and Feb for North America.

Yeah, I don't understand the hold-up. Do they not get that there is money to be made? I would gladly shell out for this soundtrack; I've become quite a fan of Murray Gold now.

Well.....except for the new theme, but they can't all be gems.

I actually really love the new theme, it's grown on me. I hated it when I first saw "The Eleventh Hour" and fell in love with Matt's theme which seems to be called "I'm the Doctor" from the track suggested in the Proms list...I'm guessing that's his theme.

Apparently someone on Twitter asked Murray if there was going to be a soundtrack this year, and he made a comment along the line of "soundtrack or soundtrackS?" So there's hope yet.

I should probably point out the elephant in the room and ask the question as to whether it's considered economically feasible to put out a CD, given that - if you believe the media, and the ongoing hemorrhaging of CD/record stores (my city just lost another one), CDs are supposed to be dead now, with everyone preferring to download temporary copies.

I personally would like to think it's hogwash, especially with of all things vinyl making a strong comeback in many markets (a store here is selling Xtina Aguilera's new Bionic album on vinyl which blew my mind). But with so many people hell-bent on manifesting the self-fulfilling prophecy, is it possible Silva Screen or the BBC have simply decided "screw it" and maybe somewhere down the line you might be able to get the tracks for 99 cents each through iTunes?

It would certainly rectify the branding issue.

Even without the "CDs are dead" attitude, if the last soundtracks didn't sell very well for Silva Screen (whatever their criteria for "Selling Well" is), that might be another reason they haven't bothered.

@Steve Mollman...yep Gold twitted that a couple months ago and he also tweeted back in Feb that there would be something in March but then that hit a snag and thus the long wait.

There's a bunch of tracks being played at a new Dr Who Prom on July 24th - I said all along that they'd follow the 2008 pattern of Prom then autumn/November soundtrack release...

Yeah someone on another forum posted that Gold tweeted that an official announcement will be coming soon (I'm guessing sometime after proms) and we'll probably get a double album or so. This is exciting. It would seem the delay is coming to an end!!

Dumb question from someone on the other side of the planet... what is a "Proms"? Seems to indicate it's a live performance featuring Murray Gold and the orchestra's involved, with appearances from Smith and Co, and maybe various props like Daleks and Cybermen?

Pretty much, yeah. The Proms are a series of popular classical concerts the BBC puts on every year. Two years ago, they had one featuring music from the Doctor Who revival, with guest appearances by several villains and a pretaped segment featuring the Doctor. This year, they're doing it again.

Ditto on Vale Decem.......and legally too ;) I still have a version where you can really faintly hear (Oh my god! I'm a girl!)
