Doctor Who Series 2010 Full Ratings Round-Up

It seems that I have all the data so thought I would post a full season round-up and compare it with previous years...

Since the shows return in 2005 the average audience over that time period has been around 8 million viewers

Matt Smith’s first series just out-rates David Tennant’s first two series but comes behind Tennant’s last series.

The more random start times given to Series 31 compared to recent series appear to have resulted in more of the audience recording the show for later viewing, meaning lower overnights, but balanced when final consolidated figures are published along with I player audiences.

Doctor Who has finished in the weekly top twenty throughout the series, with seven episodes finishing in the top ten. The high was 3rd place for The Eleventh Hour and the low was 20th for The Lodger, shown against World Cup football. The average chart placing was 12th, which again is higher that achieved by three of the previous four series.

One of the big successes of the recent series has been the take up on iPlayer. This year was the first time the whole series has been available during its run. The Eleventh Hour has become by far the highest accessed programme in the BBC iPlayer history.

Overall the audience may of moved but its pretty much still there and worldwide Doctor Who is holding or improving from what I hear enjoying wonderful ratings in places like Australia, Canada, USA to name a few.

Simply put :techman: Well done Moffat/Smith/Gillan and co.

Yeah, this show is so doomed. Britons hate Smith! Bring back Tennant!

LOL. But if you read the newspapers, you'd think the show was dead in the water, on the cancellation bubble, and with Matt Smith on the verge of being forced to hand in his bow tie.

People who hate the show - or, if they don't hate the show, they hate Smith/Moffat/Gillan/The Theme Song/The Fez/whatever - will find any excuse to justify their hatred and there's not much can be done to stop it. But the numbers are clearly on our side, and the BBC is building a new studio in Cardiff where they say Doctor Who will move its production in 2012 -- which is an obvious indication the Beeb plans to renew the show for at least another two seasons BEYOND Series 6 which is just starting production now (or after the Christmas special's done, anyway). Of course, no show or franchise is completely safe - just ask fans of the original Stargate, Enterprise, Farscape, etc. - but I'd be willing to consider Doctor Who on very safe ground for the foreseeable future. I wouldn't be surprised to see DW outlive the BBC!

I think we can see from those figures Who is in safe hands, although the BBC don't help by this constant moving about in it timeslot...get next years season on about April and give it a regular time slot and stop jumping the start time about every week.

That's the central point about the varying figures: the current controller is using Doctor Who as a 'tentpole' for the rest of the schedule, on the basis that whenever it's shown, it'll get a better audience than anything else would in that slot, and pass it on for the rest of the evening.
The downside for this strategy is that it means Who gets lower ratings than it might get in a more appropriate slot.

I think it'll be interesting to see the ratings next season when it won't be a follow up to Tennant.

Who is safe if it maintains 6-7m and a good AI but I think they'll be disappointed they've lost 2-3m from the start and from Tennant's era.

but I think they'll be disappointed they've lost 2-3m from the start and from Tennant's era.

The specials were always going to boost ratings but from the last actual 13 episode season the overall season average is not that much certianly not 2-3 million. The I player numbers and BBC 3 repeats show that Matt Smith has not so much loss people but made them spread out how they watch Doctor Who but lucky for us its on BBC and not a advert paid channel like ITV.

I'd like to personally thank Michael Grade and his shenanigans back in '86-'87 for turning Dr Who fans into a bunch of panicky little girls who obsess over ratings numbers.

And for our UK members, what's the BBC showing currently in DW's timeslot? And any word on what IT'S ratings are like?

Tennants final few episodes were in the 10 range. These episodes are on par with Ecclestone and Tennants first season.

I do like the series, just not sure about the direction and I do miss Tennant a lot. I think Moffat still has a lot to do to replace the stellar ratings we saw under RTD/Tennant.

Thanks for the summary Jax! That must have been a lot of work. :)

With all the positive reviews I've seen of Matt Smith there's no way I could have believed he'd be replaced. I absolutely loved this season! I haven't looked forward to each new episode of Doctor Who this much since Eccleston's (no 'e' on the end there) season. How am I going to survive until series 6 starts? Who wants to form an 11th Doctor support group with me?

Rewatch the series because it's so entertaining? I skipped a few confidential's so i'll try to watch those.

BBC proms are in a few weeks

The Doctor Who Prom, hosted by Matt and Karen, is on Friday, July 23, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm

Followed by a second prom

Christmas Special

Then the short walk to home with 3 months till the new season.

Tennants final few episodes were in the 10 range. These episodes are on par with Ecclestone and Tennants first season.

The final 2 episodes of Season 4 scored
8.78 Million and 10.57 million with a 42% and 49% share. Also both episodes scored 91 in the AI index.
Not surprised really they had so much going for it...

* DT established as the Doctor by now

* We already knew there would be no series 5 for almost 2 years

* Catherine Tate final episode as the regular companion

* Rose's return and final apperance

* The 2 parts had so many returning characters

* Daleks/Davros + the cliffhanger regeneration scene.

As for season 3 the final 2 episodes scored
7.51 million (40%) and 8.61 million (41%)
Season 2 final 2 episodes
8.19 millon and 8.22 million with 45% and 44% shares

The 1st season last 2 episodes scored the lowest to date of any finales with
6.81 million (38%) and 6.91 million (44%)

Matt Smith 1st season overall is the 2nd highest season average behind the 2008 final season for David Tennant/Catherine Tate

But if you read the newspapers

What Newspapers? Supply some links and you'll have a point, until then, it just sounds like you're talking ballshit.

And when I say a Newspaper, I mean one I can physically hold in a printed hard copy and not some excuse for news on a website.

There deffo has been a newspaper bias to report overnight numbers say ooo its looking a little shaky then fail to talk about final numbers. However no paper has come out and said Smith should go.

Assuming that those figures are in order finale part 1 then part 2, the Matt Smith season is the only one where finale part 2 got less viewers than part 1.
