Seems pretty cool. It's actually the latest in a long line of WHO plays that go back to the classic series. Most notable was the Ultimate Adventure, an actual Doctor Who musical(!).
I was there on the first day, which is where the youtube videos came from. I was about 3 Metres from Catherine Tate at one poiint, but that was a lot of people in between! It was enjoyable. Nigel was clearly having a lot of fun, and Nick Briggs was great as Churchill.
I actually was the first person to post about this a few months ago but I digress, yes my cousin took her son to the first show and the lucky guy got his picture taken with Catherine Tate and they were a few rows down from Matt Smith.
Sounds quite expensive for what it is. Still, it's nice that they couldn't think of anything better than recycling a classic Who plot. Classic Who's better, y'see.
Thanks. Though there's probably not too much plot as such to spoil as such. I think we've got seats right at the front though, so should get a good view. Just hope it's not too interactive.
Ok here's my reivew from last night. Would have done it when I got in but catching Spooks and SJA took precedence!
The first thing to make clear is that this isn't an adult show. Not saying adults can't enjoy it, but it hovers between children and family entertainment, and is almost pantomime in places "Oh no I didn't!" kind of way.
This didn't really dent my enjoyment at all!
The show is well served with monsters
daleks, cybermen, scarecrows, winders, smilers, angels, Judoon vampires of venice and Ood---curiously no Sontarans which seemed odd.
Nigel Planer is quite good as the main focus of the show, and makes a good showman as the son of...well the son of somebody
The orchestra was very good, but there is a fair bit of padding here, with a lot of stock footage from various episodes up on screen, which is nice enough but probably the weakest aspect of the show. I guess that isn't much different from the Proms though. There were some good lighting effects whilst footage of stars or explosions was on screen though.
the weeping angels bit was good but
the stage effects weren't as clever as I was expecting, and when the last policeman was "got" the lights/smoke effect wasn't strong enough to hide the sight of him jumping down a hole which raised a few titters! Also I expected them to move between light flashes but the Angels stayed pretty static for the most part.
There were a couple of series 5 cameos, though not the original actors, and it really is a show to be near the front, we were up in the stalls and so didn't get the various monsters stalking down the aisles.
The best bits though...
Matt Smith. He wasn't even there and yet he dominated the show, the filmed inserts were great and he was at his brilliant scatty best. Interesting to note that while I saw lots of kids (and a few adults) dressed up as the Doctor, they were universally the 11th version. Also worth mentioning for those who insisted that with the reboot all other Doctors are moot that yet again Moffat slips in a montage of all the Doctors, but only Tennant and Smith got cheers (which surprised me re Eccleston).
The Cyberman. I haven't always been the greatest fan of the Cybusmen, but seeing them 'in real life' marching around they were pretty damn cool! They were a bit stompy in places, but on the whole very good.
The Daleks. Ok they were the new versions, but still I couldn't help but feel genuine excitement when they arrived, and actually they looked and sounded pretty cool (and the colours and bulkier bodywork does help them stand out even more on the stage.) Have to say, and it might just have been the lighting, but the colours appeared more muted, and they were actually pretty cool here.
On the whole though it was a very enjoyable evening, but probably not one you can enjoy unless you park your adult cynisism at the door. Lord knows how the much the BBC are making off this. I did succumb and visit the souviner stall at the end, so now own a Victory of the Daleks T-Shirt which is very cool...
