Doctor Who is better than BSG

Doctor Who is more fun than Battlestar Galactica. Although the writing of BG is arguably much better than that of DW, I'll take DW's fun factor over BG's funk factor any day.

Doctor Who has likable characters. Battlestar Galactica should be renamed "Assholes In Space" because every character is an unlikable asshole. It's like they were all at an Asshole Convention when The Cylons hit and all the good humans were the ones who got killed so only the assholes lived.

That's a good parody of the stereotypical internet geek who is out of touch with reality.

Oh, wait...

"Sarcasm. Hey, that's original." Just not good. Look up some of the other posters on here if you want to learn how to do it right.

Because being a condescending jerk who doesn't even try to refute the argument of someone who happens to not like a show he does is, of course, in no way stereotypical of an internet geek. And of course, neither is having a Star Trek avatar. Or posting at a Doctor Who board on a Star Trek forum about Battlestar Galactica. Or being a nerd. On the internet.

Well, it's a good thing you're none of those or you'd really be looking like a fool.

Doctor Who is a family adventure show. BSG is a drama series.

The two really aren't comparable.
QFT. Doctor Who you watch with your kids. BSG (at least the new version) you certainly would not watch with the kids (well some of it you could, but some of it you definitely could not).

I wouldn't even try to compare them, I enjoy both equally.

They're both good, but in radically different ways. BSG took a while to grow on me, but that's down to my somewhat irrational 'It's blasphemy!' attitude at first. I do really like it now (Even if Ron Moore does reuse too many of his DS9 ides for me).

If I had to choose then Dr Who edges it for me, mainly down to the greater range. Who can be silly or serious, thoughtful or action packed, drama or comedy- past preswent future, Earth or alien planets, on the ground or in space. BSG is pretty much just gritty week in week out. That's not always a bad thing, I just like the variety Who offers.

Doctor Who is unlikely to finish with, "When we said everything that happened was the Will of the Giant Spaghetti Monster we actually meant it!" so I'd put it in the lead at the moment. :)

Battlestar Galactica is a fantastic genre defining show that on occasion has a weak episode. (A Day In the Life, Black Market, Epiphanies)

Doctor Who is usually a mediocre fanwank that on occasion has a very very good episode. (The Lonely Child 2 parter, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, The Library Episode - Are you guys catching my drift? :P)

Having said that though, I cared about the characters In Battlestar, and when someone minor like Billy died I was really "hit" by the death of a character. In Doctor who, Half the time I WANT the companion to die and wish that the Doctor would just get to the point already. Of course, its just my opinion, but Battlestar had a message in it. One that is of debateable relevance to alot of people, but it had one. Doctor Who lost all credibility when they had Farting Aliens and then shattered what hopes it had under RTD when they made a blowjob joke about a face in a paving slab.

Of course, its just my opinion, but Battlestar had a message in it.

Pity it turned out to be God is real, all technology is evil, vote Republican.

All Doctor Who has for a message is that it's never too late to change your life and make a difference to the world. And who wants to hear crap like that?

Battlestar Galactica is a fantastic genre defining show that
...that is comfortable wrapping up 4 years worth of plot threads and character arcs with "GOD DID IT LULZ".

If that's genre defining then I'm a fan of the wrong genre.

/rant over

Don't get me wrong, both Who and BSG are in my top 5 favourite shows OF ALL THYME. But BSG is really fucking overrated. More so than Firefly. There, I said it.

God did it lulz is a fantastic message... don't be so shortsighted...
I thought it was just a "Shit, we've got 2 episodes left and we've painted ourselves in to a corner." ending.
I wish they'd have stopped dicking around with drawing shit out in the final season, they knew it was the end why didn't they wrap everything up as it went along rather than just stupidly wrapping it up in the final hour and half?

I would agree... I love all three shows, but it's hard to say that any of them are anywhere near as good as some people would have you believe.

Babylon 5 shits on them both.

Have you watched any episodes lately? Thay haven't aged well at all. Not helped by JMS' "you can type this shit, but you sure as hell can't say it" dialogue either.

Yes, I have the complete DVD set and watch them once a year. Visually it may not have aged well (although I'd argue that the art direction shits all over most modern shows), but it's still utterly brilliant.

I agree with JMS dialogue being a bit hit and miss, not to mention half the characters becoming Captain Exposition every 5 minutes (in season one at least), but hey, I never said it was flawless.

Well it's hard to say anything is flawless, never mind TV shows, even the best of the best have some very deep flaws.

Troo.

Also, just to clarify: When I say BSG is overrated, understand that I'm not saying it's crap. Babylon 5 is overrated (by its fans at least) in pretty much the same way.

It's a case of "yeah it's good, but it's not THAT good".

Actually Doctor Who is unlikely to ever finish. period. so it probably won't come up.

I'd say the Hugo award voters have pretty much decided this issue the past three years running.

Which is fine by me. I've been hooked on DW for a couple of decades. I couldn't get more than two episodes into BSG.

I like "Doctor Who" better than BSG, but whether it's a better show or not is an open question - people can't even agree on criteria. I like sushi better than lima beans, but I know people who disagree.

Come come now, surely no TV show ever is more overated than Firefly?

Anyway Blakes 7 is better than Doctor Who, and BSG, and Babylon 5, and Firefly and the Teletubbies....

This thread is now closed ;)

What the hell, get the hell out of this forum saying things like that...hell!

(PS I agree with your sig!)
