Doctor Who Coffee Table Books for 2009

Seems like this is my favorite subject to discuss in this forum but I was browsing along as I normally do every few months on the UK Amazon and came across two upcoming coffee table books that are coming out in the next few months. The first is an update to 2007's Doctor Who: The Visual Dictionary (Chapters/Indigo here in Canada has it listed as coming out on May 19, 2009 and in paperback which will be cool Amazon UK does not have a publishing date but says it is 112 pages. The last was around a 100 pages) I am assuming that this will include series three and four stuff. I'm hoping it has a page on Davros, and the Master.

The hardcover for this year seems to be (and I'm actually looking forward to it) Doctor Who: The Ultimate Monster Guide which is 352pages and contains entries from all eras of Doctor Who and Chapters has it for a Sep release for us Canadians which means both these books will be out a lot sooner for our UK friends. Our American neighbours will most likely get these around the same time as us.

Personally I am looking forward to the Ultimate Monster Guide...it seems like it will have some cool stuff in it. The first Visual Dictionary was a little disappointing so I'll have to wait and see about this updated version. Here is a link to the cover of the Monster Guide, there is no cover to the Visual Dictionary yet.

The Monster Guide sounds pretty cool, but I bet I'll completely forget about it by the time it is released (partially because I'll probably/hopefully be out of the country at that time).

^Yes, and in succeeding years there were Aliens and Enemies and Creatures and Demons. The new monster guide will include revised versions of the material from those three books as well as new stuff from all eras.

Aside from the TARDIS interior and Dalek flagship schematic, I was pretty underwhelmed by the first edition of the Visual Dictionary, so I'll be giving this one a miss, I think.

^ Yeah I agree with you about the first Visual Dictionary...it was underwhelming and I feel bad that I asked my dad to get it for me and send it from England. I got it just before I had to go in and have my first foot surgery in 07 and it came out in Chapters just a couple of months later anyways. I was wrong about the page count for the first one, it is listed on Chapters as having 72 pages, this one 112 so a pretty significant increase. I will not be in a mad rush for it but will check it out before buying it this time, although Chapters listing it in paperpack does make it more enticing.

When they get around to creating merchandising books that offer a complete (Classic as well as Modern) scope on the subject, then I might part with my $50. Otherwise, all the ones I've seen are just expensive advertisements of the current era. And god and I sick of seeing David Tennant's face on everything...

I got the Time Travellers Almanac for christmas (as some of you may remeber) and whilst its not a bad book it does bug me that it doesn't automatically update as each new episode airs.

Also one that includes Torchwood & SJA would be nice as well.

I love Tennant... but I gotta agree there. At the very least, they could come up with some new shots and poses.

I got the Time Traveller's Almanac as well for Christmas and thought it was very good, better than the Encyclopedia (I'm expecting the update to be published after the Tennant specials finish airing, no news just my own personal speculation) which was alright but this was pretty cool. The Writer's Tale seems interesting but too expensive for me to get at this point in time, I was hoping we would get RTD to write about his process on the entire four series not just series four.
