Doctor Pym?

The

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
From the latest issue of Marvel Comics The Mighty Avengers:

What is it about the character Doctor Henry Pym that ties him to Doctor Who? This isn't the first time such a purposeful "nod" to Who was made by the character or his writers.

From the mid-late 80's, he was part of a title called West Coast Avengers where he went under the superhero guise of "Doctor Pym, Scientific Adventurer" (yeah...I know...), telling people to call him "Doctor Pym...just Doctor Pym", and running around with a long scarf and coat. In Los Angeles, California. During the summer. Yeah.

well its a quick way of explaining how something is bigger on the inside, in the UK it can be used to describe something that appears to be bigger on the inside (like a house or a car) and since comic books are generally read by nerds, nerds will know who the Doctor is, and have knowledge of the TARDIS.

Sure, but that doesn't touch on why this particular character seems to gravitate back to Doctor Who...

Well, ol' Hank Pym has had about as many costumed identities as the Doctor has had incarnations, so perhaps that's why multiple writers have made the connection.

The thing in the 80s was just ridiculous. As The pointed out, the "long scarf and coat. In Los Angeles, California. During the summer" was just so stupid, and there was no reason for Pym to adopt such odd attire - even allowing for superheroic convention, if the idea is you're going to give up being a super-hero and wear normal clothes, then....wear normal clothes. I think it was probably Steve Englehart (or whoever) having some fun, but even so....

I'd imagine this latest reference is nothing more than a sly wink to that earlier Doctor Who in-joke.
