So why was it Janet Fielding that was the go to for reading opposite the new Doctor for both Six and Seven? I'm no sure if she did the reading opposite Peter Davison when he read for the Fifth Doctor prior to getting the part. But she was a companion during the regeneration episodes.

So why was it Janet Fielding that was the go to for reading opposite the new Doctor for both Six and Seven? I'm no sure if she did the reading opposite Peter Davison when he read for the Fifth Doctor prior to getting the part. But she was a companion during the regeneration episodes.

I suspect just because she was an actress known to the producers who was familiar with the kind of material and tempo required, someone who could drop into the role easily. Some potential Bonds have auditioned against previous Bond girls (Sam Neill's screentest was with Fiona Fullerton who'd been a Bond girl in A View to a Kill for example)

Funny, in the early 1990s when there was some talk of an American actor in the role, I thought Donald would've been a good choice.

I think he'd have made a good Doctor, but whether he'd have made a good battle scarred survivor guilt Doctor is another matter?

That's what I'm thinking. There's something about that specific season that makes it hard to picture anyone but Eccleston in the role for Season 1. Even David Tennant, who occupies much of the same space as Christopher Eccleston in my memory, would have been just a bit too light for it. (Paul McGann could have done it. But then, I'm of the opinion that Paul McGann can do almost anything! )

Granted, I probably haven't seen such a wide range of Hugh Grant movies to really be able to make a judgment on his acting range. (In fact, now that I think about it, I think the only 2 that I've seen all the way through are Nine Months and The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain.)

Well he has two main ranges, he can be bumbling nice guy, or caddish rogue (who may or may not have a heart of gold) and I could see either working in the context of the Doctor, just not series 1 Doctor.

I could see Hugh Grant playing a Doctor who's charming and flirty yet clumsy and occasionally absent-minded. He would act like he always has a plan. But that wouldn't entirely be the case. Hugh Grant's Doctor would hide his Time War trauma behind his bumbling demeanor. However, there would be moments that reveal the agonizing guilt and loneliness which haunts the Doctor.

On the read-in thing, there's a huge interesting list of people who did the other role in auditions for the new lead across various franchises ('cos the actual actor was busy elsewhere, like making episodes with the previous co-star).
So Colin Salmon regularly 'played' Bond in Bond girl screentests during the late 1990s, and Moray Watson and Ian McShane both 'played' Steed when they were screentesting for Diana Rigg's replacement in The Avengers.
