Doctor Blu?

Chris227

Lieutenant Commander
Any chance of WHO making the turnover to HD/blu-ray at any point? Granted, Torchwood seems to be making the transition, but nothing on nuwho or classic Who. Classic Who probably won't benefit as well, since a good chunk of it was shot in old video that can only be restored/upgraded so much. But I can see nuwho undergoing the transition fairly well...

BBC Policy is that everything from 2010 on will have to be made with HD in mind. Not sure if that's stuff that's shown in 2010 or in production then, so the change could happen with Series Five.

I think that's slipped with the budget cuts though, hasn't it? Now isn't it just as much as is feasible now?

Bleah, I don't care. I don't see all the fuss about high definition. I'm perfectly content with the high quality of DVDs.

Same here, and to be honest, I thought the effects looked decent enough on the cinema screen in the ads for series 4.

Count me in too, just another con to make us spend money on stuff we probably already own, when will we wake up to it? Sigh...

The original series would look great in BluRay. All those wires carrying the spaceships, the detail of the latex suits, the dodgy CSO, etc.

Can't wait. :-)

Given that Doctor Who has always been produced on 625/50 videotape, even the effects, there's no reason to even attempt to scale that up to HD resolutions. It'd be a wasted effort.

Don't get me wrong, HD can (not always does) look nice, but, to me at least, it's not a big enough improvement to warrant paying extra for it.

Ahh, so true. Reminds me of my dvd copy of George Pal's War of the Worlds. You could pretty much count each individual wire holding the models up. :p

Only real advantage I can see with Blu-Ray is storage capacity. It'd be great not to have to deal with anymore of these massive box sets.
I still want a Blu-ray burner on my computer.

With regards to capacity, improving the bitrate to get as much as possible out of the tapes might be worthwhile. Obviously there isn't much you can do with something like Ghost Light or Doctor Who and the Silurians, but those stories with noticeable compression artefacts, like The Green Death and Talons of Weng-Chiang would benefit.

Nope. NuWho is shot in widescreen digital at SD resolutions. It can never be upgraded. All they could do is upscale the resolution the same way your TV/DVD player does. The older stuff was done on film and could theoretically be scanned in HD resolutions, but somehow I think a lot of the fx won't hold up to well.

I would expect that in a couple years they will redo the Tardis set and start filming in HD. But until then don't expect any Who in HD on TV or BluRay.

The older stuff was done on film

Old Who only used film, 16mm film at that, for certain exterior and location shooting. The rest of it was all shot on 625/25 PAL videotape, just as the new series is.

The new series sure as hell looks like it's recorded on film. Is there some special process they do to make it look better than the old show did, more filmatic?

They do a filmizing process, where they remove frames to make it match the 24fps of film, change exposure levels, etc. to make it more film-like. I don't know if they can do it to already post-produced, and digitally restored. They probably can, but I'm not sure it would help all that much.
