Do you wish they had kept Thomas Riker over William Riker?

According to the writers they considered this but didn't go through with it. I myself would have liked to see Will Riker get promoted so he could still be available for the movies but have Thomas come aboard to create some conflict on the show and establish a romance with Deanna Troi. It would be fun seeing Data as first officer.

Should've kept them both. The episode 'Too many Rikers' practically writes itself.

"Beaming down there is madness, Riker!"

"Don't you think I know that, Riker!?"

"I won't let you do this, Riker!"

"And I won't let you stop me, Riker!"

Having two Rikers on board would have both crazy and weird. It would also have cheapened Thomas Riker's character, as the novelty of Riker's double wore off.

Not both, but definitely in favor of letting Will go off to finally be a captain and allowing us to watch Thomas climb his way back up the ranks.

I am sorry that we didn't at least see Thomas Riker again during the course of the TNG series. I think it was a little convenient that he was being shipped off to some really distant location at the end of "Second Chances." There were a lot of plot possibilities that could have made for some interesting episodes.

Hard work to constantly be split-screening Jonathan Frakes week after week though.

I actually had a momentary flash of multiple camera shots running between similar expressions on Thomas and William Riker's face. You know that look he gets when he tilts his chin up slightly whenever he hears anything "interesting" on the show? I had a bit of a laugh over that possibility when I read your comment.

you know, that would totally make sense. It would resolve the absurdity of Will Riker staying on as exec years after realism would dictate that he should be gone and captain on another ship.

You're forgetting how Will Riker changed in TNG, he lost that ambitious streak he once had, and he really liked staying on the Enterprise, as that was where his friends were. I think it's rater realistic, as people do change, the ambition that drove them when they are longer, can fade away.

Is that why he packed on the pounds? :guffaw:

No, that's because every time he had sex with your mother she gave him a biscuit.

I don't think they should've kept Thomas over Will, but I would've liked to have seen him pop up more than just once more in a DS9 episode.

I couldn't see two Rikers working on the same ship or in close proximity on a regular basis. But I think it would've have been good if they had given Thomas more inclusions on the occasional story, say maybe helping his brorher and vice-versa in a desperate situation to save the Federation etc.

It would have been nice if they wouldn't have forgotten about him on DS9, but he wasn't an essential character.

You have a nice day, now.

I would have really liked it if they had killed off Will, like was planned. That way Tom could have joined the crew and began working his up the ranks. And, more importantly, Data could have finally gotten a promotion and been First Officer to boot. Seriously, that man deserved a promotion and NEVER got one.

Judging by Saxman1's later reply to this comment, it doesn't sound at all like this was a joking comment shared between two close board friends. If it's not that, it's pretty clear that it's infraction-worthy, so I'm giving a warning for this now.

If it is indeed just a joshing comment between two close friends, I'll retract the infraction. Saxman1 and Sandoval are free to PM me with any relevant background to that aspect of this.
