Do You Tip Your Meal at Chinese Take-Out?

My favorite Chinese place has a tip jar. I always put a dollar or two in there when I pick stuff up. The food's always great and it's my little way of saying thanks.

In the United States, regardless of the restaurant, tipping for take-out is neither required nor necessary. No one waited on my table, refilled my drinks, etc. It is not being rude; no services were provided which needed to be tipped.

What’s your opinion on cow tipping?

Cows are criminally under-appreciated members of society, and for what they give to us, their compensation is almost nonexistent. Tipping them should be a way of life, not an optional thing.

That's odd. I know about bartenders and sometimes wait staff pooling tips (which is bullshit, but that's another story entirely), but as for tip outs, in all my time in F&B, I only ever encountered the bar paying out a percentage of overall tips to bussers, while wait staff tipped out a percentage of drink sales to the bar and a smaller percentage of overall sales to hosts.

Eh, I figure each restaurant has their own method. Wait staff pooling tips is definitely bullshit and bartenders too (of those tips they were specifically given). IIRC (it's been a couple years) us servers gave a small cut at the end of our shift to the bartender, who divided that - half went to the bartenders, and half was divided between the bussers and hosts. I didn't worry about it since I was only ever a server, I just gave my little cut and went home.

I don't tip for carry out. Two bucks for delivery unless there's inclement weather, then more.

Typical bourgeois mystification.

Cows are the true proletarians of this world. We, the exploitative human/capitalist class, appropriate the surplus value they produce--sucking their milk like the vampires we are.

Your "tips" are merely a sop to conscience, and a strategy for delaying the coming bovine revolution. But you cannot stop the stampede of history.

Cows of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your halters!

I never get Chinese take-out. There is a buffet less than 3 blocks from my house, so if I get the munchies for Chinese I just plan to stay there for an hour or so. However I do tip my waitress.

They do have take-out however and there is a tip jar though.

I have a feeling this isn’t going to end well . . .

The only unnecessary tipping I do is for delivery drivers who are frequently surprised to get anything (I give em a quid) - my one really bad American habit I've carried over.

If you go to Wendy's, they're making at least minimum wage. Don't tip.

Why mention pay for the same of less work being done, huh?

If you go to get take-out at Outback Steakhouse, those people are working at a normal restaurant and are making less than minimum wage, just like any other waiter there. They had to get the food and bag and box it. They're doing work for you and getting paid less than the Wendy's employee because they're in a 'real' restaurant. You should tip them. Not the full amount you'd tip if you ate-in there, but 5% would be nice.

Unless they deliver it to your car, I would NEVER and have NEVER tipped for take-out.

They are doing the same or less work. It doesn't matter what their employer pays them. What matters is that you are receiving the same type of service and you don't tip those people at McDonald's or Wendy's, WHY should you tip anyone else for doing the same kinds of work, huh?

I tip pretty generously for table service and all that... but not take-out just because they happen to use the same receipt. It's a good racket for them though because some people see it and think "boy, I should tip!"

I'd rather it wasn't the custom around these parts. I don't see what good it does anyone. I guess there's something to be said for being known as a good tipper when you're a regular somewhere. Even if your waiter/waitress is in a foul mood for some reason, they'll usually think of the bottom line and not give you shit service. But I imagine in other places you can get much the same effect by being nice and polite. From what I can tell in America, it's apparently custom to completely ignore waiters when they bring you refills and the like rather than taking half a second to say thanks.

I tip at the local Chinese take-out place, mostly because I like their food and I want them to stay in business. I may not always do a full 15% but always at least 10%. They know me pretty well there and do a lot of nice things for us (free appetizers, coupons for future meals) so I think tipping has a positive effect.

Yeah, I always say "thank you" and give them eye contact when I say it. I want them to know the service is appreciated, and is being noticed.
