Do you think we will hear Goldsmith's TMP theme in any future film?

As I sit here listening to the immaculate score to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the three disc edition that was recently released, I began to ask myself if we might ever hear this theme played again for any future Star Trek feature film. I can't imagine that we'd hear it in any of the JJ Abrams films as I think we'd be much more likely to hear a version of the original series theme, but it would be sweet to maybe hear the first few strings somewhere.

I think the major thing is that it's much more associated with The Next Generation now than it is the first film. In fact, my friend, who's a big Trek fan, but doesn't know much of the production order was shocked when I was playing this CD and he said to me, "They use TNG's music in the first film?!" I had to explain that TNG was actually the one that used a condensed version.

But what does everyone think? Possible that JJ will use it in a future production?

I really doubt it. At this point, I think any "old" Trek music will be a few bars from the Alexander Courage theme and that's it.

At this point, the TMP theme is more assoicated with TNG by the General Public (that is those of the GP who even remember TNG). Your friend proved this with his comment of "They use TNG's music in the first film?!" So no, I doubt it will be used in an Abrams movie.

Also, there maybe rights to work out. Note, the theme was only used when Goldsmith himself was involved. He even recorded the variation of it used in TNG. In fact, the one TNG movie Goldsmith didn't score (Generations) did not have the TMP theme anywhere in the movie.

I don't think it will happen either, but I'd love it if it did. Goldsmith's TMP score remains my favorite Trek music ever, and it's a shame that it's largely been relegated to the past.

Just like I doubt we'll hear the original Superman theme in Man of Steel, I doubt we'll hear the TMP theme in STXII.

But we certainly will be hearing "Enterprising Young Men" again!
