I always liked how ST 2 led into 3, which led into 4 but that the subsequent films were new stories not second and third parts of one story. That's unlike the LOTR films or even SW.
As for the suggestions for films about DS9 or ENT, I agree that the audience probably isn't big enough for a feature film. Still, I believe there are enough of us to warrant a miniseries based on the various series. I'd love to see an 8-hour miniseries that concerns the late 24th century, which would include a few characters from TNG, DS9, and VOY. The story might even originate during ENT's era so it included one or two crewmen from the NX-01. The video game ST: Legacy did something interesting in that the story started during ENT, went on in TOS episodes and movies, and continued in TNG episodes and movies. With the right story, this could work.
