Do you think the Sheliak will appear in Discovery?

As much as I enjoyed the bureaucratic nightmare that Picard faced with them in TNG, I can't help but feel being a recurring species wouldn't do them any favours. In many cases, less is more, so let's leave them be.

I can't see why we can't have new species as well as familiar ones? Why should it matter if we haven't seen the new creation in the TNG era?

Oh you know. Canon and raped childhoods and Mom won't get off my back about the laundry. Apparently, living in her basement means I have to pull my weight and contribute to things around the house. With an attitude like that, I might as well get a job.

The legal stuff only comes into play when you sign a peace treaty with them.

Otherwise they're pretty bad-ass and they don't mess about.

Fact is that because of the selected period for the new series, I would love to see the Sheliak conflict.

I would like to see the Sheliak as well. That would be pretty cool. There's a lot of opportunity to flesh out that species. I also would like to see the Tholians. The Tholians could be one of the major recurring antagonists.

The Sheliak could be interesting, just because it's established they're active in this era and we really don't know a ton about them. Using them would be a nice familiar name for the old fans, but there wouldn't be a ton of baggage there for the new fans.

But the Sheliak are a classic Star Trek species! If they don't show up, the general public will be confused and annoyed.

It's just not a Star Trek series without at least one Sheliak-centered adventure.

BTW, I'm a huge fan of all of their one episode.

I think it would be cool to, but I'm not holding my breath.

It would make sense for them to show up at some point if they're around during this period. Why shouldn't they look to the canon for ideas?

I think it would be cool to see more non-humanoids, and both the Sheliak and the Tholians are great for that. The Sheliak too can be incorporated...I think that's a pun...into the story given the very important role corporations play in the world today. Forget the cheesy Ferengi; these guys could be far more effective as allegories to contemporary life.

Enterprise was going to do an episode about it.

Planned for season 5 if I remember correctly. They already had artwork for possible ship designs. It was mentioned in some old no-longer-canon material that there had been a small war against them.

My memories might be mixing in Wing Commander's Kilrathi & Space Above & Beyond's Chigs though. I still think the Kzinti would make an interesting plot.
