Do you think the 24th century earth has junkies and addicts?

You've got the Tasha's drug speech to Wesley.

Trek seemed to go back on its own premises because too much perfection is boring. There was supposed to be no conflict amongst 24th century people and the crew, yet by DS9 through Enterprise we see a lot of it. Worf and Obrien came to blows in one episode.

No one gets sick anymore(like past humans) and yet you see humans seem to catch the worse diseases you can imagine. lol

We cure one disease only to discover another....There are so many germs and bacteria out there waiting to go where no germ has gone before

^ He lost his mind in a world of "Post-industrial barbarians" pumping him with primitive drugs after having seen the annihilation of his solar system. He's a hobo, not an addict. There's s omething Diogenes-like about him. And if he self-medicated, again, it's understandable, no?

For all the times they've said getting sick was a thing of the past for humans, the number of times they've caught some crazy disease..........The Entreprise crew caught a disease that turned them into animals.

The Enterprise crew caught a disease that turned them into animals .

Doubtful that there are "junkies", considering that treatments are too extensive for such conditions to be noticeable. However, I do think that "addictions" (and not just substance abuse) would be noticeable, and still treatable. And btw, "money" exists in the world of STAR TREK. In fact, I think Bitcoin economics is what is at play in this future. I also think that a Federation citizen gets an allowance.

Of course, I might just have posted it for mild comic effect......

I think if I lived on the Next Gen Enterprise I'd be desperateley looking to get off my head at the earliest opportunity.

As for prison and counseling seems it depends-Paris probably did get counseling.
Counseling for what through?

Paris was never a marque zealot, he was bored and looking for something to do.
And if he self-medicated, again, it's understandable, no?
No, it really isn't

Both TNG and ENT.

Yeah, but people are junkies by choice. I suppose treatment in the future could be involuntary.

Yeah, but people are junkies by choice.

Of course they are. It's a decision people freely make without influence by others, social circumstances, poor parenting, genetic predisposition, mental health issues or desperation. In fact school kids often declare that's what they want to be when they grow up, millions of them given the sheer numbers that go on to do so.

Prostitution is another such life choice that is always entirely a personal choice, a calling if you will, as are alcoholism and homelessness.

:brickwall:

We keep assuming that enlightened humanity will give up certain things. I say, let's turn the whole discussion sideways, and assume that advanced humanity of the future, with lots of extra time for leisure and pleasure, will instead evolve beyond today's current socio-cultural stigmas and hang-ups and develop these things to a highly sophisticated and advanced level.

I think that by the 24th century, there will be a whole mainstream industry fully dedicated to recreational stimulation of the brain's pleasure centers, but through much scientific funding and research, it will all be developed and refined to the point that it's possible to induce the sought-after "high" sensation (of many different types) without triggering any negative health consequences or addiction/dependence.

Definitely there's people addicted to holodecks. I mean, people get addicted to Warcraft. Imagine being able to LIVE INSIDE Warcraft.

Based on some of the crazy diseases I've seen on these shows, I'd rather take my chances with the common cold.

This could be the same thing as asking if there are mentally ill humans and there were plenty in all incarnations of Star Trek.

TNG-Admiral Satie had a paranoid mental break from reality, DS9- a Vulcan (of all people) went crazy and went on a killing spree, A homicidal Betazoid on Voyager, and so on.

Not to mention the really eccentric people who look like they were on the border of a breakdown of some sort.

The typical answer to this was, science found a way to root out this thing and cure it, long before it becomes a problem, there's probably a whole bunch of advanced treatments that cures them completely.

But for the sake of entertainment, it never seems to happen in many episodes.

The Ferengi deal in profit and gold and other things too so money is not gone. Sisco give Quark a bill maintenance and power so there money is used on DS9

I'm one of the fan who thinks that Janeway's personality changes through the seven seasons was owing to her experiencing psychological problems steming from the pressures of command and the long term belief that she had made a basic mistake in destroying the Caretaker Array.
