First off, bear in mind that the show is just doing what the His Dark Materials novels did 25 years ago, four years before The Phantom Menace was released. The fundamental premise of HDM is that Christian mysticism is actually a product of phenomena that can be studied and explained scientifically. In the word of His Dark Materials, angels are indeed, comprised of dark matter; there is no God, but, rather, the being referred to in Judeo-Christian monotheism was itself merely the first angel to form, a pathological narcissist who sought to set itself up as king of the universe to be worshipped and obeyed; and the angels who rebelled against him are depicted as beings who fought for liberty against tyranny. This is just intrinsic to the entire story -- HDM rejects mysticism as surly as Star Wars embraces it. Author Phillip Pullman has described the central metaphor of the series as being the process of replacing the Kingdom of Heaven with the Republic of Heaven.
Just finished reading the books; I cannot express enough the irony of a book series taking on Judeo-Christianity to be filled with so much Deus ex Machina.
