Do you think LGBT characters will feature more prominently?

Captain - early to mid forties, born on earth, taught at the academy for several years and is now returning to active starship duty, recently divorced.

How many people would think this sounds like a lesbian asian woman for example? Not many! And I bet when you read this you imagined a white male who just divorced his wife. And to be honest, so did I! I wrote it and the image still popped up in my head. The white straight male as a default is so ingrained that it is hard to get away from it and that makes threads like this one so important.
That's some Jedi mind trick you've got there

I hope we can leave the politics and social commentary out of the next iteration of Star Trek. I hope the next show will focus primarily on the exploration of new life, and new civilizations, and leave our petty squabbles and modern-day politics in the 21st Century where they belong.

"I was working in a medium, television, which is heavily censored, and in contemporary shows I found I couldn't talk about sex, religion, politics and all or the other things I wanted to talk about. It seemed to me that if I had things happen to little polka-dotted people on a far-off planet I might get past the network censors, as Swift did in his day. And indeed that's what we did."
-Gene Roddenberry

^ Yes but that was 50 years ago. So then it was seen as groundbreaking. Today, who cares? TV has changed a lot. There are a lot of shows that have done the "ripped from the headlines" thing in the last 20 years. I'd much rather see exploration and "cool stuff" over topical discussions. Roddenberry was more about money and women than he was about social commentary anyway.

But since sci-fi as a genre has always been used as a way to discuss issues through a different lens, I'm sure the new series will try to address certain topics. So both camps will be happy.

Yes, but as I've stated in a previous topic, Gene's vision was one rooted in classic liberalism. The new Left doesn't have a clue what Gene stood for, and I would prefer Star Trek be free of discussions about "safe spaces" and "cis genders", or whatever new manufactured outrages the Left can come up with.

I have no problem with 'non-straight' (let's just keep it simple) characters being featured prominently. What I will have a problem with is that Hollywood would not resist the urge to make them the 'best characters evar' completely with episodes of SJW dialog that wouldn't make sense in the context of Star Trek.

If you want proof, it happened quite regularly starting with notes in TNG, and then seriously heavy-handed in VOY. It would be all about 'today's political correctness' and now about good Star Trek stories. If anything, that would hamper a truly inclusive non-straight character far more than any phobic reaction to their presence.

If I had to guess, "Social Justice Warrior."

Yeah, "Social Justice Warrior." And I know some people take offense at that term, and I do mean in , in this case, in its most disparaging way. There are just too many people in Hollywood that just could not help themselves from doing this, unfortunately, and would result in a hated character and poorly received show.

Except that that doesn't happen in shows now and, in fact, Hollywood tends to kill off LGBT characters in far greater numbers than straight characters.

Do you have any evidence that "Hollywood tends to kill off LGBT characters in far greater numbers than straight characters", or is this anecdotal?

Here's a list of some of the female gay characters killed off over the last few decades, 157. List doesn't include female gays who are victims of the week from medical or cop shows.

Here's a list of dead male gay characters, 108.

And now the list for straight characters that have been killed off, please. Then we can do a comparison.

Have 80 to 90 percent of the straight fictional characters who have been allowed on TV, GRUDGINGLY ALLOWED ON TV, been murdered to death?

Seriously.

You want someone to make a list of every straight character that's been on TV?

www.imdb.com

Sure maybe there's a few gays peppered on IMDB, but since IMDB is only %0.05 gay, which is clearly inside the statistical margin of error to assert that there are no homosexuals on IMDB, there's your list buddy.

Although it's a bit of cheat to include characters from Dantes Cove in that deathlist, because there were no straight characters in that series with lines.

I'm not sure how my distrust of Hollywood was allowed to turn into "Dammit, We're VICTIMS!" ... But it really does illustrate my point pretty well, even if that was unintentional.

It's good drama to have your lover killed.

"Noooooo! I WILL AVENGE YOU!!!!"

It's usually a sign of things stepping up for a fictional character when their sex buddies get whacked.
