This whole thing is just ridiculous. I'm sure that every state has some laws on their books that other states don't like. Why is this one getting so much negative attention, especially since it is reasonable and does not represent a major shift in immigration enforcement policy? Also, what are those cities hoping to gain from a boycott? Those who are affected the most are not going to suddenly run to the state lawmakers and pressure them to repeal the law.
That is a good question especially since there is similar federal law on this. All a state has done is mirror federal law. I think the angst is coming from two sides with the same goal. They want to exploit illegal immigration for their own benefit. One side are the pols who want voters. The other side are business that want cheap labor that depresses the market forces that set wages. The crocodile tears are insulting.

The arguments being made this time are the same arguments that were being made a few years ago when the federal government tried to step up enforcement. The pro-illegal immigration crowd would be making the same arguments regardless of what SB1070 actually said. They're trying to score political points. It's not just that they think SB1070 goes too far. These people won't be happy with anything less than full amnesty and/or a continuation of the current federal policy of turning a blind eye to 99% of the illegal immigrants currently in the country. It's less a humanitarian argument and more an argument of, "We should be allowed to stay because we've been savvy enough to evade law enforcement so far."

The enforcement problem has gotten so bad that ICE can't even act when a child admits on national TV that her family is here illegally. (They ask about how law enforcement can have reasonable suspicion that someone is an illegal alien without racial profiling. Well, why not start with those who confess to being illegal on TV and those who go to protests with t-shirts that say "Undocumented.")

Also, shame on you, Rick Romley! One of the things our new Maricopa County Attorney has announced is that he wants to ease up on the employer enforcement angle of immigration. There's no reason for this unless he is deeply in the pockets of local businesses that employ illegals.

And shame on the hypocrite, Mexican President Felipe Calderon! He dares to condemn our mild immigration policies while he has 200,000 troops stationed at Mexico's southern border!? Don't try to portray yourself as some great egalitarian, Felipe. You just want everyone to ignore illegal immigration because it provides an easy way to get rid of Mexico's poor discontents and because repatriation is your 3rd largest "industry." Make great strides in upgrading Mexico's status from "shithole" to merely "slightly slummy" and none of us will hear about illegal immigration ever again.
QFT.

Indeed. Too bad much of this will be ignored.

Maybe if they pay AMERICANS more money to do those jobs then perhaps the illegals will stop coming over. I wouldnt stand out in the hot sun and do the crap they do for the pay they get.

California ...blah, blah, blah... a million other things i did NOT mention

Including...part interest in two power plants located in Arizona! :guffaw:

you're a little late to the party on that one Dennis.

man, I really farkin' hate to say this, but that attitude is a big part of the problem.

too many citizens of this country are spoiled and just too damn lazy, which opens the door for companies to hire people, legal or not, who are willing to do the crappy jobs.

having said that, I still support Arizona, and Rhode Island State Representative Peter Palumbo who recently introduced a similar bill in his state.

You can't pay an American less than minimum wage, but you can pay an illegal whatever he's willing to work for.

See the nature of the problem?

not to dismiss your point, it's definitely valid, but what you're talking about occurs mostly with day laborers.

I'm personally aware of at least 3 companies that hire illegals and pay them more than minimum wage, and I'm sure they're not the only companies that do so.

Absolutely I support Arizona! Why didn't anybody have a problem with this law when it was only a federal one?

But now that it's a state law as well, it's nothing but EVIL, EVIL!

I don't get it. The only reason I can imagine is that people are afraid that the law might actually be enforced against illegal immigrants.

To which I say - Don't we want to enforce laws against illegal immigration? If someone is here illegally, they're committing a crime.

I do hope you have reported these three companies. Perhaps you should stand outside and protest them. Have you done that? They are violating the law after all...

Quadruple QFT. If America is such a racist nation, why do illegals flock here?

Also, if you go to 50states.com you'll see that California is listed fifth, even behind Arkansas. Arizona is third.

That's just a list of the states in Alphabetical order..

And that should tell you something.

The 'C' is holding California back. Yet the state does nothing to drop it - because the state government is disfunctional. The citizens there are such an embarassment to civil society that the state didn't even put one on the state flag (I'm from Kentucky, which features two Kentuckians on our state flag).

What's more, California has whole forests of the oldest trees in the world - because Californians are too lazy to plant new ones.

It has all those theme parks and entertainment options because Californians need distractions from living in California.

It's the home of the Star Fleet Academy because the other states were too grounded in reality to give up useful real estate for a pie in the sky project to protect us from Klingons and Romulans.

All that scenic beauty you so love is just the scar tissue left over from God's tectonic punishments of California.

Wise up!

Sleep well ohh demented one..sleep well...

Oh yeah...We have In-N-Out which have the BEST burgers EVER(Arizona and Vegas are lucky we share that with them):)
Actually the best burgers are at a place called My Brothers Bar on 15th and Platt streets in Denver next to the REI flagship store. Frontline has been there.

Activists blast Mexico's immigration law

Arizona's new law forcing local police to take a greater role in enforcing immigration law has caused a lot of criticism from Mexico, the largest single source of illegal immigrants in the United States. But in Mexico, illegal immigrants receive terrible treatment from corrupt Mexican authorities, say people involved in the system.

And Mexico has a law that is no different from Arizona's that empowers local police to check the immigration documents of people suspected of not being in the country legally.
"There (in the United States), they'll deport you," Hector Vázquez, an illegal immigrant from Honduras, said as he rested in a makeshift camp with other migrants under a highway bridge in Tultitlán. "In Mexico they'll probably let you go, but they'll beat you up and steal everything you've got first."

Mexican authorities have harshly criticized Arizona's SB1070, a law that requires local police to check the status of persons suspected of being illegal immigrants. The law provides that a check be done in connection with another law enforcement event, such as a traffic stop, and also permits Arizona citizens to file lawsuits against local authorities for not fully enforcing immigration laws.

Mexico's Foreign Ministry said the law "violates inalienable human rights" and Democrats in Congress applauded Mexican President Felipe Calderón's criticisms of the law in a speech he gave on Capitol Hill last week.

Yet Mexico's Arizona-style law requires local police to check IDs. And Mexican police freely engage in racial profiling and routinely harass Central American migrants, say immigration activists.
Meixco's President needs to STFU.

Not that I'm defending Mexico, but don't they have a fairly weak federal government, and the job of enforcing everything comes down to the local level?

If one of the problems with Border security is the drug trade, what about making pot legal to grow and sell here in the US?

That would certainly kill that business. And that need to cross the border illegally. And the crime that it creates.
