Do you still wear white?

I can see that. Old timers being bigger on conformity, and women in particular back then not having much to do but tend house and pay attention to fashion.

At the risk of sounding mildly sexist, which I'm really not... why is fashion so much more interesting and important to women in general? What do you see in it that totally blows past most guys?

^ Well...because it's fun? Really it is. And it's no sillier than lots of other pastimes, including some of those more typically enjoyed by our brothers, husbands, fathers, sons and nephews.

I'm ashamed of my ignorance in matters of fashion but I've never heard of this before. I guess it was never a rule in Italy (considering also that we celebrate Labour Day on May 1st).

You don't wear light colored suits, trousers or shoes in winter, but that's more a matter of convenience than rules.

You do have some rules, though - I have no idea what, but I can promise you that you do. I cannot believe that American and British women are alone in their desire to bring order to clothing choices.

Ah. I've just never found dressing up to be much fun, myself. Any clothes that would be generally regarded as "nice" or "dressy" I find terribly uncomfortable. You're right that silliness is relative, and I do plenty of silly things myself. I guess I'm just in the dark as to what's fun about it.

Well, because it's clothes, of course. Yeah, I know - still inexplicable, right? It's just one of those things, I'm afraid. Either you get it or you don't. I don't get why my husband is perfectly happy to rotate through the same few T-shirts week after week after week, with cleanliness and, maybe, color his only criteria, nor how he can be happy with only five pairs of shoes (1 pair of tennis shoes, 1 pair of hiking boots, 1 pair of regular boots, 1 pair of brown dress shoes, and 1 pair of black dress shoes), but there it is. Just one of those things. If he's happy, that's fine with me.

I'm not a woman and I'm not totally into fashion, but I love finding something to wear that looks nice. It's just fun.

Huh. *pokes at you in the petri dish*

Yeah, some guys do. That's why I said "most guys". All the guys I know that are into fashion are gay, but I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions. Yourself, for example, unless I missed something.

People in San Diego have exactly one wardrobe. Summer. People wear tank tops on Christmas.

Sure, we have jackets (and need them down by the water) and it occasionally gets breezy or even chilly around January, but what is worn under those jackets doesn't change.

We're also a beach town, which means that you're going to see tanks, t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops practically year-round. Hawaiian shirts and plaid aren't uncommon either.

I tend to stick out like a sore thumb when I'm wearing my collection of velvet and lace skirts, scarves and ponchos (I wear a lot of blacks and browns). In fact, I got such a reputation for wearing black that, after a friend joked about it, I wore all white the next day (once again, a fancy, lacy skirt). Being that I look as white as a ghost, I looked like a dead bride (especially with the cream mesh shawl). It was pretty funny.

I'm on the other side of the world, so different seasons to most folks on the board. I don't have many white clothes except for some socks and business shirts, which I wear all year.

I'm incapable of fashion. So I just wear what I have when it suits me and it's clean.

I also have to wear a suit and tie to work everyday :(.

I wear what I want. I know of no "rule", and even if I did, I'd go out of my way to break it.

Or at least ignore it.
