Star Trek = Coke
Star Wars = Pepsi

New Coke tasted too much like Pepsi, thus outraging many loyal Coke drinkers.

Abrams' Star Trek is too much like Star Wars, thus outraging many loyal Star Trek fans.

Ergo, Abrams Trek = New Coke.

And will probably wind up being shunned in a similar manner.

Ang Lee's version of the Hulk made about the same as this year's version, yet the new one is hailed as a success while Lee's is considered a failure.

Why?

Because of fan response. The fanbase generally panned the filim for a variety of reasons (personally, I didn't think it as all that bad, but I can understand some of the arguments). And I suspect this goes to franchise viability, i.e., they may show up for one of these, but if the next one is like this, they ain't showing.

Remember, they sold a lot of New Coke those first few weeks.

Another thing to note about the new Hulk movie coming so close on the heels of Lee's film, that might also be made about the upcoming Punisher film. Audiences apparently don't mind allowing a do-over if the last one was a dud.

So, if this one winds up stinking up the place, regardless of the box office take, I fully expect Paramount to hand the reins over to someone else who'll better toe the canon line and, essentially, undo the reboot.

It looks like they took the TMP 1701-refit and back-dated it by slimming down the engineering hull and adding different nacelles.

What's not to like? It's an updated version of the original ship. Too many Trekkies are stuck in the past. Which is ironic, if you think about it.

I don't think the film is going to fail because of the design of the ship, nor would I draw a conclusion that somehow this film will magically erase the 700+ hours of Star Trek that exists. I really you guys would chill out a bit. Outside of calling this thing names and telling us how stupid the filmmakers are, I have yet to hear any compelling reason to dislike this new ship, except on the basis of personal preference.

^Which, to a dedicated Coke drinker, is an abomination.
But to a Pepsi drinker, it sells more.
I'm a classic Coke drinker. Since they changed the formula back and substituted corn syrup for sugar, it has never tased the same as it did prior to the introduction of new Coke. European Coke still uses sugar (in some countries) and it tastes just like it did when I was a kid. Mexican Coke has a little more syrup in the mix and it the most awesome beverage on God's Green Earth.

My point is that once new coke failed, they reintroduced classic coke with changes that would make it more profitable in modern times. I think the same could be said with Trek. People who enjoy Coke now may never have had the experience of what it used to taste like, and hardcore Classic Coke fans have accepted the difference in taste, if they even notice it at all. No childhoods have been raped and none will be for this film.

Actually New Coke was Pepsi... they tasted EXACTLY the same...

No, Pepsi will always taste better than Coke.

Are you trying to turn this into a Star Trek vs. Star Wars argument??

No, I'm showing how the example is stupid. I think Star Trek is far superior to Star Wars, yet I like Pepsi better which is he used to represent Star Wars in his example.

The new vision of Trek is simply another flavor of the same thing, caramel soda, and some of us like different flavors better.

So STXI is cherry coke? Because I love cheery coke.

If you like. Whatever flavor relates to you and your likes.
That's why that kind of example doesn't work accept to the person giving it.
Just like with Trek, each person's taste is different.

And that happens to be the one flavor of Coke I like ;)

How Spritely of you. I like your Moxie. I hope if someone Hires you, I am sure you'll give them a Jolt when you do the Dew. But don't be Mellow, Yello, Don't let your worries Crush your ambitions. Don't Doctor or Pepper your negotiations. Take an approach that is Fresca and I'm sure your boss will pick up the Tab, and the air will feel like a Sierra Mist.

QFT. I like Pepsi better as well, has more flavor to it, and ST is three galaxies better than SW. :p
