Do you know the Scorpions?

I knew that the media were exaggerating a bit (as always).

The concert was very nice btw, despite them being quite old they seemed to have lots of energy.

^Schenker's solo stuff was really cool until that Robin McAuley clown showed up. the stuff Michael recorded with Graham Bonnett or Gary Barden on vocals is a lot better. Schenker did some really cool stuff with U.F.O. too.

The UFO stuff with him is my absolute favorite stuff, followed by the early MSG work (like you mentioned, Bonnet/Barden).

And on a side note, Bonnet is one of the best vocalists in rock, but IMHO one of the worst song writers.
But again, just my opinion, as I have almost everything he can be found singing on.

As far as the McAuley-Schenker albums, if you listen to the non-radio tracks, there's still a lot of great Schenker guitar work there.

My only wish now that the Scorps are "retiring" (in, like 3 years) (and other than them not calling it a day) would be a Schenker brothers album.

glad you had a good time. what songs did the Scorpions play, and what other bands were on the bill?

I was lucky enough to see Schenker with UFO a couple of times, once in the 70's and once in the 90's. I also saw 'em once with Paul Chapman and they still rocked. I've always liked their music better than the Scorpions.

and I agree about Bonnet too. if it wasn't for the fact that he's always been able to align himself with a great guitar player, we likely never woulda heard of him.

^ Pretty much all the great guitar players (at least metal ones). Blackmore, Impellitteri, Malmsteen, Schenker, Vai.

Each time was too short of a time I think. 1 album with each except Impellitteri, with whom he did 2 studio albums..

The Scorps are one of my favorite bands.

All the Scorpions albums have some great music, except possibly the first one Lonesome Crow.
That one was quite a bit different than anything else.
Different but still excellent; really under appreciated.

Sting In The Tail really evokes a lot of Fly To The Rainbow, In Trance & Blackout for me.
Probably the best full album since Savage Amusement.

I haven't heard much of Sting yet, but I'm actually kind of disappointed with it. It's kind of over produced. And, I'm surprised you didn't mention Crazy World as I was sort of under the impression it was pretty unanimously considered that band's best work.

Savage Amusement was the last of their albums I bought, though I sold off 90% of my CD collection about 10 years ago. And I got Sting ripped from a friend.

So I didn't get to hear entire albums after that one, but it's hard for me to imagine any of them being that good.

I guess it would always come down to opinion. I think most of their best work was around LoveDrive & Blackout.

I failed to mention LoveDrive when talking about Sting. Some of the same vibe there too.

But not retro for the sake of retro, like say, KISS - Sonic Boom, which is actually an amazing album and really the best since Love Gun or Destroyer.

Weird thing about Sting, Tarja (formerly of Nightwish) is supposed to be "featured" on the one track.
And I have every Nightwish album BTW. I can not hear her on that song. At least not in any "featured" way.

Check out the video for "The good die young" on youtube.

I found a "live" version, which was pretty much a lip-sync, but Tarja was on the show with them.

Aside from the barely perceptible background vocalizations, I think it could have been any singer doing it.

I'm a big fan of both bands, but I figure if you're going to have Tarja singing, it should be more of a duet.
